NEW CAVE

Buster wright and myself have just explored and rough-surveyed a new hole near Winster.
200/300 ft long and 65ft deep. 3 pitches, all natural and all in the dolomite.
The spot was found by David Whitehouse, one of the old Limestone caving Club guys and he called us in for a look, so we got it handed us on a plate really!
The Old Man has been through most of it but hasn't mined it as there is no mineralisation to speak of; plenty of hanging boulders though!
Nice. :D :D :D :D

Talk about missing something "right under your nose" - I live in Winster!

Bloody typical - We spend 3 years digging in bagshawe - and tating about in various other spots in the peak - and you get handed something like that on a plate
Bugger -

Really though - nice one :)

Much prospect for extension - i.e. - the lovely drafting choke at the end that you can see beyond????

:D

I don't really want to spill all the beans on this just yet (couldn't help having a gloat though!), Dave Whitehouse found it but he would be the first to admit he's knocking on a bit and that's why Buster & myself got involved. As far as i'm concerned it's his cave and up to him to name it and release all the details in Descent and the Derbyshire Caver, I wrote up the exploration for him and he's going to stick on an intro saying how he found it etc.
As for any extension - don't know? There is an initial pitch and then two unconnected pitches leading to separate ends of the pot. One of these wasn't bottomed as a few dodgy slabs need sorting (I was free-climbing and booting a two hundredweighter down as I went, but eventually it welded itself to the shaft!) but I could see it went on below 40 ft. When Dave releases details (which will be in the next issues of the two aforementioned publications) I guess it's a free for all if anyone is interested. :D

There must be miles of this sort of cave to find in that area, I had a look at shaft near Painters Way at Winster with Buster last year (two of the farmers dogs had gone missing) this dropped about 50ft into a big natural phreatic rift passage with some quite big chambers and mud formations, again it was very loose but no mining had taken place, the miner had just moved stuff about to access various areas looking for ore. Probably 300ft of passage or so. Buster dosesnt seem to get very excited about this sort of stuff so its good that it gets a mention now and again.

Yeah, I know what you mean Mark, Buster is a lead miner; nothing wrong with that, but I get a bit giddier about the natural. The two dogs never turned up by-the-way.

I can't release location or access details yet untill Dave Whitehouse doeas it. Won't be long. (It's not very shiny though!)

Hi! Whilst dredging around the old topics, came across this one for a new hole near Winster. Can't remember ever seeing any more details about it or about access to it. Does anybody know more or where exactly it is?
cheers jon

Its called Luntor Pot and is near Luntor Rocks above the village, near a couple of shafts which have been capped. It can either be approached from fields via the Limestone Way or by footpath from the minor road leading to Bonsall from near the Ore House near the Miners Standard. The entrance is not obvious but is under a small limestone block.

There has been an article in Descent a few issues ago and also The Derbyshire Caver. I'm at work just now so can't give the exact issue details.

Cheers Paul, that's great. do you know if there are any access probs since it's so close to your home? If I can escape the wife, I'll go for a nose this weekend! Jon

The original information was that there are no access problems and I haven't heard of any changes. But since I have not spoken to the landowner (or tennant) I can't really confirm or deny that. Best check with Iain Barker to make sure as he did the original groundwork with Buster.

Funny you should say that - I've spent the quiet moments (and there have been quite a few this week. ) of my night shift, loading all my CD's of photos onto the laptop - its funny what you come across.
