What a great photo showing the hot lava sinkhole Ed.

By the way Ed is there an official name for these features that initiate lava tube formation?

Richard,

The photo shows lava erupting from a fissure, and flowing downhill.  The eruption only started a couple of days ago, and I think this photo was taken within hours of it starting.  Essentially the caves start to form as the top of the lava freezes - I don't think anyone has come up with a meaningful name for the Vulcanospeleological equivalent of an inception horizon.
