I like the design of the new Waterwheel swallet 'gate'. 

First time I have come across a locking mechanism where you don't have to take the lock off again to close it when you leave.

The only problem I had was when inside trying to get my fingers over the bolt so I could hang off it to pull it shut before going down the ladder.

One in N.Wales.

Gave him a guided tour of parts he wasn't previously able to get to (without Ladders, lifelines etc), and he's helped us shift a fair bit of stuff out. It eventually pinched down and doesn't go, but he was as enthusiastic as we were.

Thank goodness that at least I am post " mano-pausal " so that means that I can comment on anything without rancour.  One could say that I am drifting towards senility so my excuse for occasional outbursts may lie there. I have always thought that being bland is the ultimate character crime. People with odd opinions should be appreciated and it means that more forum talk is generated by such. One has to be careful not to be too rude or offensive but these odd flaws are covered for me by my lurch into the Seventh Age. ( though not quite sans everything ). Lets face it the forum would die if it became bland and agreeable to all. More mud raking please .

Both And and OR have made good points, and together demonstrate that a sensible balance between care and bravado is perhaps the thing to aim for.

What do people hope to gain from joining any forum such as this?

There are probably as many reasons as there are members. Condensing this to a few categories (together with my own views on each):

1 - Find friends and contacts - no problem here at all.
2 - Use as a channel to promote useful information, especially if you represent a caving-related body. Like key changes! Great.
3 - Ask for advice and help - excellent reason to join up, even if the reason goes once you have got what you wanted.
4 - Promote your personal project, aims and objectives in the caving world. This has the potential to be a problem! But can be a positive thing, of course.
5 - Promote your group's interest (rather than your own) to other cavers. Go for it.
6 - Primarily to confront others - this probably won't end well, especially if deliberately conflated with "promotion of a personal interest". But confrontation is not always a bad thing, provided it is done responsibly.

There is no easy way to manage this heterogenous mix of reasons, or the people concerned.

It is probably those in groups 4 and 6, and the bad interactions between them that deter everyone else from contributing, and that might be evident in the matter of the CSCC key news.

If everyone tempers the way they get involved, maybe the forum would work better?

The opposite of what OR said is also true - if there is too much confrontation, it WILL kill the forum.

Just so I know why do you have to go to a caving club to pick up the keys? What if no one is in (during the week) or they simply don't like you because you are from up north.

This is why I think they should be held at a pub as well, then no one can say anyone is empire building.

I remember how hard it was trying to get the Drenen key, so much so I have not bothered going back, though from what I read it seems I just need to pick a spot on the ground and dig down a few feet to get in lol.

Usually there are one or more people to contact and arrange things in advance rather than just turn up.

Mendip isn't a very large area and there are quite a number of local cavers. I'm sure if you contact one of the Mendip clubs a key could fairly easily be arranged whether for a weekend or midweek trip. In case of difficulty contact the CSCC Conservation and Access Officer.
