New Mining Forum/Db Discussion Group

I've created a new topic so that a) the Aditnow thread is not hijacked, b) People who are not following that thread can see this.

Proposal: Setup a Group for discussing and creating a new web site to act as an 'open'* forum and database for British mining.

I've created a Slack group where anyone who is interested in the above can join and contribute, either technically or by formulating requirements. The rough brief is to emulate some features of AN: Forum, Mine Db, Photo Db, Docs Db, which can be accessed via single login with unified access levels across all features.

In creating this Slack Group, I am not putting myself forward as Lead, and am hoping someone else who joins will take on that role.

*The intention (as I see it) is to keep the source and data as open as possible, with admin and responsibilty handed to a group or trust whose makeup can change over time, and would consist of members who join.

Sorry. I have no idea what a Slack group is.
Is this only for competent contributors, or also for very interested observers/ethusiasts? Wishing you the very best in your undertaking.

Quick update: We now have a small group of mine explorers committed to sharing the initial costs of infrastructure and licensing, as well as developing a mining forum/website. This will essentially be the 'core' group. To expedite progress, we are setting a deadline of the close of play this coming Sunday for joining the said group. To join, please indicate your intention using the Slack link at the start of this thread.

The intention is to launch the mining forum as quickly as possible. Subsequently, at a more leisurely pace, we plan to integrate mine databases, mapping, documentation, and photo features using a common security model.

Others who still want to contribute financially, technically, administratively, or in any other capacity can still do so. We believe the Slack group can continue to serve this purpose.

Might be worth saying which areas you have volunteers for & where you'd like more coverage....

For the initial 'core' group, a bit more on the general web infrastructure/LAMP front would not go amiss. Getting the forum up is going to be mainly infrastructure provisioning, software installation, and configuration.

It's going to get more specialised later - requiring custom coding for single sign-on, database, mapping, and content distribution.

The hope is that those who don't have the time or inclination to join the 'core' group remain and contribute via the existing Slack workspace. The 'core' group will report progress to that workspace, whose members can shape the 'direction of travel' in a strategic way. Further down the road, we will need devs for specific jobs, forum mods, and mining area overseers.

We've now got a 5 person core group for the intital forum developement. We'll give periodic updates via the Slack link above. Please use this link if you want to want to continue to shape the forum in any way.
