Here's a bit more for you! I joined the BPC around 1965-66 at the age of 16, my first trip was Mongo Gill Holes. In 1970 I travelled to South Africa and Rhodesia where I worked for a couple of years and  when I returned to UK I joined the CPC. I used to hang around with Pete Grey, Tony Blick. Bob Cross, John Allonby and few others. In 1976 I moved to NZ for adventure  and found plenty. Last year John Allonby stopped with me for a while when he was over here on Holliday. I am hoping to get back next year and spend some time in the Dales and the pubs   so I will keep in touch.

NZ is a great place for caving lots of potential  :D

Ah - that Ripcord!

Most of those CPC folk you mention are still around and active to greater or lesser degrees.

I once asked the CPC 'Ripcord' why he was so named. "Because I bail out on every trip" was his reply!

I remember teaming up with him on a Birks Fell club meet (probably 'cos nobody else wanted to). He was really chuffed when we got to the end of the cave (although he did say on emerging from the entrance that he wouldn't have gone down if he'd known he was going to feel like he did when he got out)!

Top fella! Can't be Pete's dad surely?

Just to confirm how a got my nickname! when I was a member of the BPC I used to wear a pair of tight pants which had a big ring on the fly zipper  :tease: now you all know  ;)

Now that you know who I am I'm still wondering who you are?  I can think of a couple or 3 cavers from your part of the work that arrived in Godzone about 1976.

further more when am I going to see an up to date survey of BFG/Nettlebed?  Kieran's been rather quiet lately.  Is he working, scrounging money for more caving or hiding?  :-\

Pete - as soon as I read your clue in last post above I knew exactly who the UKCaving forum's "ripcord" is. I never met him as he moved to NZ before I was born. But I certainly know him by reputation! My very first caving trip as a child was to that choke in Dow Cave and I was told about how he'd passed it at the time. Later I came to know several of his generation of CPC members who told me all about his discovery.

The "Ripcord" I was initially thinking of was someone who was actively caving with the CPC in the 1970s but he moved (I think) to South Africa and was no longer in contact with the club, as far as I'm aware. I'd just wondered if he'd turned up in NZ.

For "ripcord" - greetings and felicitations from the Yorkshire Dales.
Please come back and sort out the next choke in Dow for us!

I think you're confused,  My dad is not Ripcord; he is much older and not in a position to use the Forum... he wouldn't know how to turn a PC on let alone use one.  But going by the dates, there are only two people I can think of that might fit the bill.

According to the report:

There is a huge arch over the entrance which is about 30-metres wide and 15m high - it's the most impressive cave entrance in New Zealand

And they've only just found it! Amazing! I guess that says something about the topography/countryside there.

Martin Farr is currently exploring out there and is doing well apparently in another area. Having just returned from New Zealand I can quite believe you can find new cave as big as this. NZ is the most spectacular place size for size I have yet visited. Only did a tiny bit of caving but the highlight was seeing a volcano erupt in front of us see Tongariro blast

Sounds very exciting!

Actually, its under the Tablelands near Mt Arthur.  Saying it's under Mt Artthur is like saying OFD is under the Black Mountain

On another point, Two teams are about to go into Nettlebed and Stormy pot wit a Redbull film crew to hopefully, finally connect the two caves.

Kieran has just announced that Nettlebed has been connected to Stormy Pot after a bit of digging.  They popped up in the second camp's urinal.

hope to have a map to post eventually.

The through trip (no sumps) is 1200m deep

How deep is it? Reports say 1200m and deepest cave in Southern Hemisphere.
Muruk in PNG is 1258m.

Just heard that a second very positive dye trace has been made between Bulmer and Blue Creek Resurgence. This means that there is a mega system under the Mt Owen Massif. I'll have to post a map
