Northern Speleological Group

Good question. The last time I can remember it having been mentioned as active was in the 1970s (when I remember someone mentioning they were a member). But this is based on memory from a long time ago and probably isn't reliable.

So, sorry Langcliffe, I don't think I can help on this one.

Google?

You have helped, in that I remember it being around in the early 1970s as well. The latest reference I can find to it (using Google) is 1969. Cheers.

P.S. The skylarks were in full throat in Kingsdale on Sunday.

I thought that the NSG were involved with the opening of Aquamole Pot ?

Just to avoid any confusion, much of what people now refer to as "Aquamole Pot" was discovered by Cave Diving Group members from the mid 70s onwards, by diving upstream from the Kingsdale Master Cave. This would not have involved NSG members directly, unless they were also cave divers (which I suspect wasn't the case).

The NSG involvement Beardy is referring to is in relation to opening the top entrance, thus removing the need for diving to visit these passages. That was less than 20 years ago, so Beardy's point is a good one that this club may have been active more recently than earlier posts in this topic might suggest.

The Red Rose library has a small selection of NSG newsletters dating from 1957 until 1963 (no.35) the last publication (Bulletin) however is dated December 1966. Nothing since.
In 1963 Bob Leakey was listed as its Chairman and hut fees at the hostel (Scar End) were 3/-.

Thanks everybody for your replies. I followed up Beardy's lead, and sure enough Descent 168 says of Aquamole "We were joined from the start by the stalwart members of the Northern Speleological Group" - and that was in January 2002.

Was it the same as Bob Leakey's NSG which seemed to go very quiet in the late 1960s, or a later reincarnation, or a different organisation altogether? It's all very confusing.

Might be worth having a word with a certain gentleman who masterminded the technical side of gaining entry from the surface at Aquamole; I'm sure he'll know who else was involved at the time and what their affiliations were.

Good idea. Rupert may know, as well.

Prior to the surface connection to Aquamole there was a group digging in the rift next to Jingling.  I'm sure it was that group who then went on to help open up Aquamole.  They often drove up there in a fleet of 4x4s and I suspect they were the NSG.  Rupert S and Martin H climbed the avens in Aquamole and I was on the surface when the radio location was done.  Either would know who that group were.
