Petzl Aven/Superavanti Buckle Covers

Yes they've messed up, but you'll struggle to make a harness fail even if you forget to double the straps back - so it's not putting lives at risk
I disagree there have been multiple reports of the leg loops becoming undone entirely, if your half way up a pitch and a leg comes undone.... major issue.

But hasn't that been whilst crawling / walking rather than prussiking? They were presumably tested for latter, but not so much the first two

A 'doubled back' leg loop on my superavanti harness came undone on me whilst prussicking. Checked prior to setting off up the rope as they had repeatedly slipped during the trip already. Unsurprisingly, not used it since. Yes it was reported to petzl, although they didn't seem particularly phased by it, even though I queried the fact that there had been other reports of this happening. Pretty sure it is either the tape is now too thin for the slots in the buckles, or the buckle slots are too big for the tape - if indeed there is a difference between the two.

squeaky bum time

You're the only person I've heard it happen to. How far did you get off the ground?
not the only person I know of (unless they’re going by a new name on here), a friend of mine (who isn’t exactly lax on safety) had both leg loops come undone on a tyrolean.

It sounds incredibly terrifying to say the least

This sounds like something that should be reproduced, in a relatively safe environment obviously - maybe on the YSS "rolling rope"? If the effect could be captured on video and publicised, I suspect a root & branch rethink of safety at Petzl could be forced. Backfitting a plastic widget doesn't cut it for me.

How many people with any experience are going to buy a new harness that relies on a bit of plastic? I can maybe live with the one I have got for my own use, but it is already over 3 years old and will go in the bin in the not distant future. They need to change something. If only because it makes it annoying to adjust.

Well, I’m sure if you asked Petzl, they’d say the piece of plastic is an optional accessory and isn’t necessary for the safe function of the harness 😉

available soon, waiting for estimated March shipping.
Thanks Petzl.

Hello Tom,

Thank you for your email. The anti-slip keepers should be available in early March.

I will keep your email and post them out as soon as they arrive.

Kind regards,

Edit: please note they're "anti-slip keepers" not anti death guards (as I nearly described them in my post). Any similarities to terminal plummeting if straps come unthreaded are purely coincidental

Slightly facetious but isn’t polyester a type of plastic? So you’re just relying on a different piece of plastic. We’re always relying on plastic (like the ropes we swing off).
Admittedly it sets off the orange colour quite nicely.

It’s puzzling that Petzl haven’t updated their website to show this new feature on the Aven and Avanti. Clearly missing a trick there.
