Not sure what it stands for, "Some Loud Bang" is about all it did for us though!

It's a low power industrial explosive that you don't need a full blasters license for. It's one of the tools members of the BCRA Explosives Users Group utilise. You still can't walk in off the street and get it, attending training courses, certification etc. are all still required, but a lot less hastle than a full explosives license - hence why we smiled at someone "in the know" who has the paperwork.

Apparently it'll turn a boulder of limestone into gravel, but faced with 100+ year old miners concrete made from mine spoil, old boots and anything else left lying around.... It hardly touched it!

Off hand, no.

I suspect the BCRA Explosive Users Group is a good place to start.


(BTW: Gravel may have been a bit of an over exaggeration on my part - but you get the idea!)

What depth did you drill your holes to,and what did you use for stemming ?

Were you working to a free face,if not,did you drill any relieving holes ?

Popping a boulder is quite different to breaking a man-made wall in a tunnel when using low power stuff like SLB or similar products.

Don't know on both of those. I was busy ferrying equipment up and down the shaft (getting soaked in the process).

When I'd finished that I left them to it to remove the obstruction whilst I went to take photos in another mine nearby, I wasn't actually present to see the prep.

Concrete dam across level, only access to one side, wall thickness about 12". Later found that loose shale (similar to cornflakes in size) had collapsed the other side filling the level. I don't know the fine details of the setup - only that it hardley scratched the surface, at least caps could knock chunks out.

You'd need to drill the hole at a very shallow angle in a 12" wall to give sufficient length for stemming,otherwise the stemming would blow out,which seems to have happened in this instance.

Capping or plaster gel would be the best bet for that wall.

you can still get hold of larger Hilti Caps (AKA Safety Cartridges) They are about twice as long as a standard cap and only black ones are available.

Most places I've been to have not heard of them, you need to ask for safety cateridges to fit a Hilti DX750. The Stockist can order them direct from Hilti.

They cost about £13 - £16 for 100 - Bargain! :up:

Note: These Caps have a fare old kick, use them Wisely :!:
