Just thought I'd bump the poll in case it inspires anyone else to vote or change their vote.

Must admit I'm surprised to see so few votes, but I'm sure that doesn't reflect a lack of enthusiasm for the scheme, more likely a lack of enthusiasm for arguing about the slogan  :-\

I changed my vote as soon as the option became available. Not at all surprised by the low turnout in votes, pretty much par for the course on here (and other more national votes/elections etc).

I voted because I prefer a certain slogan and one which seems better suited (IMO) to the idea. I've (we've) been kindly rewarded for bringing stuff out of a cave when this scheme was only just born (planned sporting evening trip took place on the day I'd seen the original conservation post). Admittedly there was no doubt it needed to come out, even without the scheme we would still have done what we did, the slogan was not even in our heads. I don't necessarily agree with the slogan but it's a marketing ploy designed to make you think (I know ukc aren't selling anything,  my wording is not perfect and I'm tired etc). Anyway, a slogan is just a slogan; if I bought a pricey pair of trainers, for example, would I just do it, but what should I just do? Do I doubt myself, what should I bring out? Is an old rusty shovel or crowbar rubbish about that I need to bring out?

Any slogan can be interpreted in any way you choose to read into it..

The main focus of the scheme is to get rubbish removed from caves by offering simple rewards.  The popular sound bite in the poll does meet this need but it is pretty bland.  However, it doesn't address one of the key aspects of the initiative which aims to encourage a change of attitude to 'rubbish', 'stuff', 'old gear' call it what you like, which is left down caves and to get people thinking about that old rusty bucket rather than just walking on by.  The original slogan certainly got people thinking about it.

No one involved in establishing the scheme or who supported it with the ?1500 worth of rewards has asked for the slogan to be changed.  So I hope every one would agree that the views of those people should be given consideration.  I am not against changing the slogan if it offends so many of the Ukcaving regulars but it does need to promote changing attitudes to conservation.  Perhaps the slogan has already served its purpose and I'll look into phasing it out and replacing it with a strap line that better reflects the aim of changing attitudes.

In the meantime lets go clean up some caves.

Managed to make any progress on this Badlad? (It just dawned on me it's been a fortnight since your last comments.) Quite a lot of folk are keen that this should be moved forwards.

Let's all move forward by cleaning up some caves and not getting too hung up on a few words.  As can be seen from those who have already done some cleaning a little common sense can soon root out the rubbish.  What cavers are telling me is that once you actually start looking around in entrances and underground it is amazing just how much rubbish there is down our caves.

As for the slogan we will be phasing it out for something different in future promotions of the scheme.  The banner on the top will soon be getting replaced by something else for example.

Just noticed it's 3 weeks since you mentioned you'd change that slogan Badlad; any progress yet?

I think a less browbeating approach might have been more favourably received and not just by Badlad.

I presume you are being ironic Simon.

Actually I've done quite a lot about it as you will see if you attend Hidden Earth or read the next issue of Descent.  Also I see a lot of old digging crap has been removed from some of our caves.  I said,

My emphasis on 'phasing it out'.  I hope that meets with your approval.  Anyway,

What have you guys done - anything?

1. Visiting caves that didn't require any restoration effort, due to excellent conservation measures already in place.
2. Visited mines where the items lying around tell us a great deal about the history of the place.
3. Decided not to get involved any further in this topic (this post excepted).

Keep up the good efforts everybody. It all looks like a good job done to me.

Sorry Simon, I don't really understand your comment.
All I was doing is asking.

Quite a few folk are still concerned that the slogan in question gives the wrong message and Badlad kindly offered to do something about that. He generally does what he says and I was just interested in progress. I'm struggling to think why you referred to this as "browbeating" . . .

Anyway, to more positive aspects; Badlad - you asked what other people have done. In my case I've been very busy sorting out all necessary permissions for the major conservation job which I alluded to earlier; this has involved quite a lot of driving around seeing people and time spent in correspondence. It's going well and there should be some results soon. It's still at a stage where we'd prefer not to publicise things though. I also came across some digging debris only yesterday (elsewhere). I'm not 100% certain it's finished with otherwise I'd have tried to move it all yesterday - but I need to find who it belongs to first and check. Either way it'll be sorted, which is what matters in the long run.

So cheer up Simon, there's loads going on and always has been. It's just that some folk choose not to broadcast it.
