As I think someone else mentioned, UKCa has helped me discover a range of likeminded mates other than just my club based buddies, such as Owd Git and ttxela, who have led me into some very strange spots as well as the fowl art of hen racing!

In follow several forums quite avidly because I am retired and have loads of spare time. Then I only worked three days in a week when I was at work. No set hours -- dream on. It seems to me that cavers can be more cynical than most. Perhaps that is the nature of an exclusive and not well understood pastime. One tends to poke fun at ones colleagues in a cynical way. My other forums are mainly about collecting stuff and tend to be more lighter and friendly. Certainly there are a heck of a lot more photos. Generally I post nearly 100 images for show reports on one thread. It took a heck of a long time for that sort of thing to be accepted here. My Reservoir Hole thread attracted several adverse comments and I nearly gave up on it. I closed it at somewhere near 70,000 views as I had little more to say. Funny thing is I got a fair bit of feedback from viewers abroad, some good feedback from my fan club trio here but also moans about all the higher res photos. The latter you never see on collectors forums. They want bags more photos. I also tried a retrospective with Fairy Cave Quarry ( The last 45 years ) . Having loads of 70's photos and log books to me seems pointless unless somebody else gets to see them.
I say this because I hoped it would inspire others and broaden the base for in put here. There is so much scope on a forum but generally very little in the way of interesting input . That especially with dig reports. Fine save them initially for a club mag. but remember only members will see it. It will still be news to most of us here. Loads of room also for other topics and ideas. For one I would like to see something on scallops. ( not recipes please ). You can chase such stuff around on the internet but a forum can be topical and bring research up to date. It can get a load of photos added as well.
Of course there is little a moderator can do about topics. Any forum is only as good as its members and as we know the large percentage are usually watchers. Yes incentives might help in this respect. Perhaps we could come up with a list of things folk would like to see here. Its easy to be introspective but much better to look to wider horizons.

Blimey!
The images I've posted (mainly in Hello From Priddy) are hosted on my website and the stats show they have been downloaded via links from ukCaving 15000 times in the last month

That's a lot of downloads, especially as repeat views should be getting cached by the browser!
ukCaving is a busy fourum

The forum says my Hello From Priddy thread has been viewed 4015 times, so it stacks up as real traffic and not bots!
It would be interesting to know the breakdown of the thread views; it's a heck of a big number too!

Hi Duncan, I am so not a technology expert but reckon the 15,000 figure must be bots (whatever they are), however the 4015 views is correct.

So thank you for posting what is turning out to be a very popular thread on UKC  (y) ;)

Oh, and please keep the photos coming, I for one am enjoying watching your progress....

One issue for me in terms of posting stuff about projects is that sometimes an open forum is just not the place if info is confidential, or needs to be restricted in some way for whatever reason. I wouldn't want to work on a project for months only to find that it had been 'raided' before it was complete or made safe, simply by inadvertent posting. Sometimes the locations just can't be disclosed. Sometimes I'm working on club projects, and so plenty goes on the club forum (and occasionally the open club website), but it's either not relevant to a wider audience, or it's necessarily confidential again. Sometimes there's an article or other publication being produced, which again means a certain amount of restriction because of publication dates, etc. I'll always try and join in on 'general' discussion if I can contribute anything, but sometimes I find it's best to sit on your hands if you don't know the full picture or can't divulge the big picture - or just don't have a clue what anyone's on about!

These aren't excuses, but valid reasons why members (me at least) may read but not post as often as we'd like. It's not like I'm short of topics to discuss. And I'm on UKC daily, as I consider it a very useful resource and a great place to keep in touch with like-minded people. I find the regular bickering genuinely hilarious, and would probably miss it if it were gone, but I'm funny like that - I can be entertained by someone else's argument for ever. Thanks to Pegasus and Badlad and the team for all their hard work and commitment - it is appreciated, believe me.

4000 view x 4 images is about right - and there are a lot more than 4 images in that thread.
And will do :)

4032 views of 93 posts (as I write) - is that 43 people have looked at the topic each time it is updated? (just one possible scenario, I know!)

Hi Pegasus,

One thing I'd like the mods to consider is whether "Yorkshire" is the correct heading in the "caving areas" area of the forum? I've though this for a while - despite being from Yorkshire! - but it really struck home with the recent posts re Underground in Furness. Furness was historically part of Lancashire and is currently in Cumbria so nothing to do with Yorkshire per se at all. And likewise the Three Counties system is what is says on the tin!

So how about renaming it "The Dales" much like Mendip, Forest of Dean etc, aren't county specific either.

"Stands back and waits for the flak!"  :)
