Save the trees! Turn limestone into paper!

Hmm, lets use up yet another finite resource.. I mean it only takes perhaps a few million years for the trees to form - or have I got that the wrong way round..?

If it degrades to dust in landfill surely it will eventually form limestone again in the landfill which given enough time will have caves form in it, then hurrah lots of new caving areas everywhere!

Not all limestone is caving land. There are billions of tons of dead boring chalk to grind up first. Gimmicky rubbish all the same, though, surely?

This proposal to turn Limestone into paper is pure madness.

"Limestone derived paper ... an environmentally responsible packaging material ..., as not being sourced from timber, it helps to preserve the earth?s forests".

"the packaging material does not contain any acid, alkali or bleach, making it very eco-friendly."

?this material, sourced from natural minerals, provides a much greener alternative to plastic,?

"carbon footprint  - it uses no water during its manufacture and also low consumption of energy per tonne produced".

"the company is expecting demand for the product to grow rapidly, in particular from food companies seeking to boost their green credentials".

They have got to be joking? Can quarrying limestone to make paper be somehow more eco-friendly than growing trees to make paper?

It's so potty it's not even worth rebutting. But "green" is such a powerful mantra, they'll still make money out of it.

Is it any wonder that people are becoming cynical about 'green'

"Becoming cynical"? I was there years ago!
Now I just get angry about how the "greens" beat us up about saving the planet all the time.

It's not all limestone. There is 20% plastic in the stuff. Plastic being less than half the density of limestone, this means there is getting on for the same bulk of both. What happens to it? Either it oxidises away and adds to the CO2 in the air or it remains where it is. But in that case, what exactly makes it "biodegradable"?

I suspect your new caves would be made of plastic, Alex.

Yep, 20% plastic. Non degradable, non recyclable when mixed with stone....

made from....ummmm......let me see now, ....oh yes......OIL

If the oil were bio it would be a good way of fixing carbon and disposing of it ::).

There again, one could cut out the carrier bag stage and just pump biofuel straight into the ground. :-\

Last time I looked, low energy bulbs still used mercury. Most of which ends up as landfill in "England's GREEN unpleasant land"

There is now a legal duty for shops that sell them to take back used ones for recycling, none of them do though.

BTW website of manufacturer emailed to the grauniad 'greenwash' column

The "Greeniad", please :)

Methinks dawn raids on random households are called for. Any unlicenced bulb and it's five years in the slammer. No receipt for a returned bulb and it's another five years. Welcome to Downer's Britain.

The only old bulbs left in our house are in the oven and the fridge. What's this got to do with paper made from limestone?  :-\

<Electrician> They're not bulbs they're lamps. "Bulbs grow, Lamps glow". </Electrician>  :sneaky:
