Should we still be caving?

What do we talk about now?

When we start caving again (perhaps with social distance) what caves would we do?

I can think of plenty of SRT trips where social distancing wouldn't be much of an adjustment though the cafe before and pub after are half the trip for me.

Unfortunately living outside of a caving area and having lost one income I'm wondering if it will be an option to travel to go on trips even once the restrictions are lifted. We've already taken one of our vehicles off the road to save cost. I'm also expecting work to want to 'catch-up' when things get back to normal so I'm hearing rumblings we may be expected to avoid taking leave once we return.

I think I may be hanging up my helmet for a while.

Jim Rieuwerts told me that he and his mates explored Oxlow, Giants etc. for years during the 1950s exclusively using the bus from Sheffield, in many cases taking vast amounts of rope ladders with them, which obviously weighed considerably more on the way home. Going up Winnats Pass alone must have been hell. They missed the bus once and walked it back - it's fifteen miles just to the outskirts, and they got home around 8am. Hardcore.

No problem! Who knows what the economy will look like after this. It might not be as bad as the 1920s as the government are covering peoples' wages and rent if they're laid off and, after a vaccine, people will be keen to get their old lives back and that means spending (easier to spend as well if your wages have been covered). It might take a few decades to pay off the debt but the gov is borrowing at a low interest rate.

Anyway caving is a cheap hobby because the kit lasts so long and the rope requirement scales really well. You might need 300 m of rope to go caving, but that 300 can do for a club of 20 so that's ?30 each. Second hand cars are pretty cheap in real terms compared to the 70s as well so clubs should be able to keep costs down.
