Are cavers really such a quiet bunch? Not in my experience they're not

Has the new look (still unfinished btw) made it better or worse to post here?

Come on people. Plz keep the place alive and post - what we've had so far has been great - there's a lot of interesting tsuff held in these pages....so let's keep it up!

:x I certainly don't find it as user friendly - Over the past few days my view posts since last visit has not worked however it did today. You may have hit the nail on the head the postings definately seem to have dropped off since the new format was launched.

I dip in 4 or 5 times a day to check the "view postings since last visit", I find that to be a wonderful tool.
I've never felt more in touch with the general caving comunity (I don't live in a caving area)
The site itself is now very similar to the other forums I visit, so I suppose it helps navigation - but then again, how many people visit more than a couple of forums?

Perhaps the problem is that the site just looks like any other portal/forum now? That said, didn't it anyway apart from a vaguely caving related pic at the top?

I'll have to think of a way of changing that.

In a way, this version of the site is just a stop-gap until the completely new, re-written version of the forum software is released, probably early next year.

I think the "portal" aspect of things might confuse people too. The portal has potential but is really just another view of the forum so may be a bit unnnecessary really.

I think that the time and dates section of the messages is screwed.
I posted last at just before midnight last evening, but that is being reported as today, 2.5 hours in front of actual time, (currently 10:25am 26th November)
Could this be why you apparently had no messages the other day? (when the bug appeared?)

i agree - the view posts since last visit thing is great...sometimes it tells me there arent' any ewhen there are though - but that might be a problem with my computer??

If you think this is quiet, try the newsgroup uk.rec.caving! More like one post every week! This is wonderful by comparison.

One thing I find irritating is haveing to log in to post - but then, allow free posting and the forum goes the same way as the US dominated rec.caving newsgroup (for those that don't know - a personal battle between two individuals at the furthest extremes on every dimension you care to think of and with damned little tod od with caving - at least that's where it was when I gave up on it)

slowly getting used to the new look. All the added features are pretty cool.

I am finding though that the new post stuff isnt working properly for me.

Firstly - I find that sometimes I log on and there are various topics highlighted orange i.e new posts. If I dont read/spot them all and log off, when I log back on, they have all reverted to read, so I often happen across posts I missed.

Then there is the 'new posts' thing which is a great idea, but then it doesnt seem to work all the time.

and finally, just my personal opinion, but I dont reckon the portal is of much use here, maybe in the future when (hopefully) this place is more busy.

Oh and while Im on (sorry) but is it really nessacery to have 'uk caving' and all the other sub area topics. If the sight was really busy, like hundreds or thousands of posts a week it would be useful as you could cherry pick your areas. However, given the site traffic at the moment, I reckon it would be beneficial to have all the posts under one topic. It would prehaps make the place *seem* more busy. Same could be done for the techincal topic.

Just a thought . 8)

Can't really defend myself on this one......apart from the fact that I have been soooo busy lately.

As far as the site goes.......ignore them all Bubba!! I think you are doing a grand job. I know from experience that it is not easy looking after a website (I currently maintain and run three............) and getting it so everyone is happy with it.........you can never please everyone!

As for making the site a little different from all the others (and might pump up the posting count a little!!), why not hold a little competition for grafix and other content for the site??

Yeah if you go onto Profiles i think you can state which country youre from, your date of birth which will give you your star sign and your year of birth which will give you your chinese year. ( i am a pig...wah!!!) ;-)
