Sludge Pit Hole access at risk

To visit Sludge Pit Hole cavers are required to follow some very simple rules, including paying £1 in cash into an honesty box.

The owner's lock on the honesty box has been replaced with another by persons unknown, twice in the past year. The owner is also fairly sure that the deposited cash has been stolen and should any of this happen again the owner will deny access indefinitely.

Access requirements for the cave are published here.

Is the honesty box inside the cave, ie, only accessible to people with a key for the CSCC lock?

Seems like a lot of effort for what would only be small beer. Disappointing behaviour all the same.

Our club visited a few weeks back and I reported the log book was soaked through (was hard to sign names) and money had been placed within log book section rather than through the hole. We put our money through the slot and added what was in the bucket into the slot also. Not many had signed the log book. Really hope we don't lose access as it's an enjoyable cave to visit. A few week ago when I visited Sludge Pit I too found it impossible to write in the damp logbook and also transfered a number of £1 coins from the top bucket into the bottom bucket via the slot.
Soggy/damp unwritable logbooks was the reason we changed all the Warden caves in Fairy Cave Quarry to waterproof logbooks and pencils.

Today I visited Sludge Pit and this time found it impossible to open the top bucket lid, so couldn't even access the logbook.
I suggest the reason for coins going in the top bucket is due to the slot in the bottom bucket not being obvious (on my previous visit I had trouble finding the slot even though I knew it was here somewhere due to the mud on the bucket. Today I even took with me a permanent black marker to try and indicate where the money slot is, but alas it wouldn't write on the damp plastic and I see others have done the same - paint might be a better idea.
I would recommend waterproof note pads for log book and perhaps putting it in a seperate half size Daren drum, as we have for Fairy Cave Quarry caves. And either make the slot obvious in the bucket or perhaps a different money box with obvious slot (ammo box??).

Went in today to have a look at the problem. The slot for the money does look like a thick black line rather than a slot. To get into the top you need to push the lip of the lid inwards to allow it to rotate past the stop.

Must admit the person in front of me couldn't find the money slot nor open the lid to get to the book:)

Glad that when I couldn't open it, it wasn't just a case of operator IQ too low. :ROFLMAO:
Can I refer you back to my earlier sugestion of a seperate money box and log book box ie an ammo box and a daren drum.

I suppose this thread was started by cscc so it is reasonable to post reply and comments in the expectation they are read

But, comments in threads can quickly be buried by other comments.

If I had something important to add that I wanted the OP to see I would DM or email them.
