I've seen far more barrel knots worn down to the core, and tails that are basically non-existent, than I've seen people taking shock loads on cowstails. I've actually decided that the plastic-covered sewn terminations on my adjustable Petzl Connect thing are safer than knots for this reason - much more robust.
(well at least it _was_ adjustable, now the rope has fluffed up it's a nightmare to adjust...)
Incidentally, if anyone knows where to get ~5m 9mm dynamic rope lanyards with plastic-covered terminations, so I can cut them in half and use them to replace the rope in my Petzl Connect, that would be great (would give one fixed end with covered termination and one adjustable end with stopper knot termination)
