St. Hughs, Charterhouse

This is an odd question, perhaps, and not really connected with caving.

Most times I go to Mendip, I go past the little chapel St. Hughs, at Charterhouse.

I live not so far away from a monastery near Horsham called "St Hughs Charterhouse".

Does any clever person know what the connection is between St Hughs, and Charterhouse? What is a Charterhouse? [St Hughs is the patron saint of lead miners, I believe]. It's just something I wonder about every time I go past either place.

St Hugh was a Carthusian monk.
And a 'Charterhouse' is a Carthusian monastry (the order originated in France, in the Chartreuse Mountains which lent their name to the first Carthusian monastery).

St Hugh formed the first Charterhouse in England, in Witham, Somerset.

Which maybe the area now known as 'Chaterhouse' - any locals know?

(PS that was from Google and Wikipedia, rather than my own prior knowledge!)

Thanks!  (y) Everything makes sense now as the local monastery is, strangely, Carthusian. No link to Somerset from Horsham whatsoever! I wonder whether the lead workings at Charterhouse, Somerset, were owned by the Carthusians in pre-reformation days. That would make sense.

Seems he wasn't a lead-miner's patron, as far as I can tell.

But look how many St Hughs there are!!!

Does being called "Hugh" increase your chance of being canonised?

Miners' patron saints are Anne, Barbara, Eligius, Leonard of Noblac, and Piran

Barbara seems relevant to mine explorers - also patronage "against mine collapse". Very useful!!!

Lead miners don't seem to have a saint especially to protect only them.

I'm not sure but it does seem to increase your likelihood of going out with people called Elaine.  :coffee:

Whatever; it certainly increases your chances of going out with anyone. Well, increased versus my chances, anyho.

Where's that? I grew up in Horsham and know the area very well but that name rings no bells.

Its actually near Partridge Green. Do you know that really tall spire you can see on the road from Horsham to Henfield?

that name rings no bells

Being a monastery, I expect they do ring bells, but probably quietly which is why you haven't heard them.

Ah, I see. Thanks. I probably mistook it for a church, and as a committed atheist ignored it!

I am often an avid watcher of "Time Team" although I thought the one they got Malcom Cotter to help them with, Cooper's Hole, Cheddar Gorge was nigh on useless.
The silly B*****s decided to do it in a rainstorm/flood event.
Much more useful things to do in a flood event, like go down Upper Flood Swallet to c if there is more than the meerest trickle of water in it and if not, y not.
Anyway, Time Team, a few years back, did a whole programme on
a Charthusian Monastry, not sure but I do think it was in Somersetshire. :read:

Patron saint of bachelors, bookbinders, patronage of people who carry things.

A more appropriate avatar? Does Cap 'n Chris always end up carrying the kit?  ;)

Gosh, you're too sharp today, Andymorgan.

Anne: no. I'll remain with the unpopular name as it kinda suits me (being unpopular 'n' all).
