Stupid slip-ups

I was having a laugh this weekend at the tale of a novice who fell off the stile near bar pot and broke his ankle. The conversation got round to the enormous number of 'adventurous/dangerous-sports-loving' people who seem to go caving/climbing/paragliding or whatever and then break both legs falling over in Tesco or tripping over their own fireside slippers.

so lets have some embarrasing confessions then...

spose mine has to be punching myself in the nads whilst climbing.
greased off the undercut crimp I was pullling quite hard on - resulting in a healthy punch in my neatly harnessed sac (in the days of lycra too) followed my a nice little fall into my harness.

my belayer nealy pissed himself laughing so hard - and wouldn't lower me so I could at least roll around in comfort.

A classic of mine was after quite a difficult trip on Mendip and coming back out after a good 5 hours without a single bruse or bump..........

Then upon tackling a particulary tricky gate, slipped, tripped, caught my foot and ended up face down in the road with my right foot stuck in the top of the gate :(

An MRO callout could have been on the cards.

must admit i did have afew strange looks!!!!!

On returning to the surface after successfully getting to the Out Fell Master Cave at the bottom of Hammer Pot I managed to "stick" my hand to a frozen boulder at the entrance to the cave and peeled off some skin as I pulled my hand away. The worst is that we missed last orders too.

As Pooh Yeandle said, "Some days don't go quite as planned."

Both legs of flares caught in bicycle chain, fell over when stopping at junction

Digging a big hole, like you do, chucking muck over my shoulder, caught blade of shovel on a tree root but the handle end kept going, punched myself in the eye (Black eye)

I got my pride hurt when the padding fell out of my bra in Asda and some poor innocent bystander handed it back to me saying eh love youve dropped your hanky

I was bored once waiting to go into Big Meanie on Leck Fell whilst someone else was rigging the entrance pitch, so I decided to have a go at body sledging on the snow in my TSA only to slide a bit too fast towards the cave entrance and the others waiting to go in, I hit a rock and twisted my ankle. I had wellies on as you do and thought i'd be fine, my foot remained prety numb throughout the exchange trip but was a bit concerned when I tried to get changed after and couldn't get my wellie off. TSA sledging is still a great sport though. Next time i sprain an ankle i might avoid caving immediately!

Someone else who shall remain anonymous i know, managed to wake up at YSS, stand up and smack his head on one of the roof beams, instead of caving for the day he spent it in A+E getting stitches in his head! :D

Soooo... does this mean I shall forever more be able to enter Tesco with no fear of a nasty paper cut; or a dark stain from a squashed tomato!!?

Huuzzah!

3 years ago went walking above Keswick one christmas. Got on top of Latrigg and it was deep in snow. Decided it was safer to go down the hill sliding on my arse, big mistake!. Sort of went like this:

This is easy!
Hang on, going a bit fast, try to slow down
Can't slow down, in fact going even faster
Bugger mates dog is in way (whoosh dog goes over my head!)
Double bugger mates girlfriend is in the way (She jumps out my way)
oh bollocks theres a fence coming up rather fast.

It's at this point that i just lay down, hoping that many points of contact would slow me down. Ii worked but the point of contact was my ribs on the only tree stump on the hillside   . And what did my caring mates do...laugh their heads off!.

Also when opening a lock on a canal, make sure you put the ratchet on when winding the paddles up. Coz if you don't the lock key spins round and whacks you on the thumbnail. Which causes you to spend a Saturday night poking holes in the nail to relieve the pressure!.

Having at least one black finger or toe nail is normal for me, so I've obviously tried that technique in the past a few times. I found a hot needle to be the best tool to use. I wouldn't suggest doing it though, unless it is exceptionally painfull and very localised as it is a great way for infection to get in. If it is really painfull I usually have sufficient an area of blood under the nail that I can encourage it out to one of the nail edges. But the swelling, and hence the pain, normally subsides in a day or two anyway, so why bother?

I saw a shoulder dislocated that way once, so you probably had a 'lucky' escape.

I've kept quiet on this topic before as I could so easily swamp it with my stories!

I don't know why my wife calls me "disaster area"! :?

Nobody's going to want to cave with me now!
Can I just add that underground I am safe, it's just on the surface that I'm not!

I was in Box mines with a member of this Forum when we came across an electrical cable that was hanging down.
We are both electricians.
I declined to touch the cable.
He got hold of it,and shot across the passage, swearing profusely.
Next trip we tested it,it was 240 volts.

Wo-hoo! Take down some old domestic lamps and plug them in. See how many years they run for before the power's cut off!

Still off subject, but take a flourescent tube under HT power lines and watch it glow!
