Symonds Yat Caves

Bagpuss. There is information on the caves, including some surveys; but all you need do really is walk down the slope behind the log-cabin refreshment shop at Symonds-Yat Rock. You can then spend a pleasant half day exploring all the caves as you follow the bottom of the cliffs south. The longest caves are in the area of the Longstone, or Pinnacle; a spike of rock separate from the main cliff. C7,8,9 and 10 are four entrances that all link up inside. A little further south, C3 and 2 have a voice connection. C3 is the longest. All of the caves have some interesting tight bits to add a bit of sport. Always be careful in the C2 and 3 entrances, as climbers look on them as convenient toilets sometimes. Bowlers Hole, marked on the 1:25000 map, is the nicest spot in the valley to eat your sandwiches. They do get a lot of use from outdoor groups, including me; but sport climbers leave far more litter. You could round the day off with a visit to Cross Joints Swallet, the Forests most challenging short cave?

Sounds like a good day out, just need to persuade a car driving caver friend to join me! I'm guessing Cross Joints Swallet is tight?

Cross Joints is very tight in a couple of places. To get to the far reaches of C3 requires passing a tight flat-out section. The C8 entrance is very tight. The far reaches of C2 are very tight in a couple of places. All good fun though, and nobody has ever needed rescuing AFAIAA.

I had a look down the entrance of Cross Joints on Saturday. I didn't investigate much, but it looked like there was a lot of leaf debris in there. Does it usually need digging out to make progress at all? I'd like to have a trip down there shortly.

Hi Rhys. It shouldn't need digging at the entrance. The dam got wrecked a few years back which let a lot of water into the cave and blocked it at its narrowest point yto all but the thinnest. There shouldn't be any water flowing into the entrance, no matter how wet it is. You meet the stream about 20 meters in, just where it gets tight. Its only tight for about 10 meters. Best let this wet weather pass before going; I've never been in when it was really wet, but I don't think it would be very pleasant.
