Templeton Visits

The landowner at Templeton Richard Masters, has yet again told us that people have been visiting Templeton without permission. He lives at the bottom of the track on the main road and he sees (unknown to him) cars go down his track he gets worried. He has machinery etc in sheds and he does not want them stolen or damaged. Therefore he investigates, and finds a car - an H reg Honda of which he has the registration number in this case- parked at our dig. He has always said that Templeton visits are to be restricted to our usual digging nights only - ie Monday and Wednesday evenings.
Please please respect this. Is it much to ask? We are very willing to show people around our dig and bore them silly on Monday and Wednesday evenings any time around 7.30pm or later. Richard has been extremely good to us and we do not want to jeopardise our access to this dig. We have put 12 and a half years and we do not want to lose it.

You clearly don't understand, Elaine. Caves are resources provided for the sole benefit of cavers. Landowners - whoever they might be - have no right to keep cavers away from caves wherever and whenever they wish to visit them.

Am I reading this incorrectly or are you completely out of your mind?

Irony, dear boy, irony. Though I have come across people whose view of cave access does approximate to that post. Some of them even post on this site.

This is a difficult one, obviously you have to respect the landowners wishes, especially in this case where not following the rules could put at risk access for the diggers, who have put in so much hard work and money over the years.
Having said that the "culprits" may not have been aware of access arrangements in this case. Is this forum the only media for cavers to find out, there may not have been anyone around at the caving huts to enquire, so they innocently went for a look.
Has anyone thought of anything as old fashioned as a sign strategically placed at the start of the track!  :)
It could have been a caver who has dug at Templetons in the past, who felt they had a right to go there!

Of course, apart from the 'especially' why should there be any caveats on this statement?

Alternatively they could have looked at the access section of the CSCC website, where the information is perfectly clear.

Given the very clear message from Elaine at the top of this thread, surely any caver who has dug there in the past would be well aware of the particular arrangements at this site.

Looking at the CSCC website is all very well Graham, if every caver is on line. Otherwise think about a f-!#*@g Sign!  :ras:

By 2011 77% of UK households had internet access. At a guess that's probably over 80% by now. I think Graham's observations are robust and relevant. Wilful ignorance or disobedience is pretty much the only excuse a visiting group could have.

Cap'n Chris, I do not doubt that around 80% of households are on-line, or have internet access. Is this to say that 80% of cavers are on-line?
Even if 80% of cavers visit the CSCC website or this forum; What about the 20% that dont?
So, For that 20% a sign would clarify and put an end to this problem.
Besides 80% of households aren't interested in stealing a Massey Fergusson I'm sure!  :coffee:

A car with 4 cavers visiting Templeton would have a near 100% likelihood of having at least one of their number with the ability to find out the access conditions. Assuming they cared. Or could be arsed.

Have you heard the one about four internet deprived cavers that stumbled across Templeton's?
There's no sign of em!  :D

Never mind about the medium used to access information: presumably the hypothetical group of cavers intent on visiting Templetons must have discovered it exists at all and where it is located in the first place in order to visit it. Surely the access conditions would also have been included in whatever source of information they accessed?
