I was just wondering if anyone can recommend me a decent manual/book/website on good rescue techniques. Primarily getting someone off the rope in either ascent or descent and also setting up rigs for hauling etc etc.

I did my IRATA level 1 years ago and worked on the ropes for a few years but have forgotten most of the basic rescue stuff I learnt. I need a memory jogger. A friend of mine who is a level 3 said he would give a few of us a workshop in rescue techniques but i would like a bit of reading material to keep my brain ticking over.

Cheers.

Ralph Johnson has done a DVD on rescues. He is part of Crewe caving club but I think you can get it from caving supplies. He has dine others too and I have literally had the DVD on my laptop whilst practicing the techniques!!! If you forget just press back!!!!!!

What LesW said.  (y)

NB: An excellent feature of the reference DVD is the ability to select a specific indexed subject, i.e. hauling a tired caver, and zap straight to it - the whole thing is a catalogue of visual/narrated techniques and is presently the best thing out there.

I'd say Life on a Line (I had the volume one free PDF download).  Very very comprehensive 'bible'

For getting someone off ascenders and down to the ground, the best technique is shown in Alpine Caving Techniques (they call it the "cut the rope" method). The rope-cutting technique in Speleo Vertical and its companion book, The Complete Caving Manual, is also viable; but the ACT technique is clearly better.

I still think Speleo Vertical & The Complete Caving Manual are worth buying, but I would buy ACT first; although a bit dated, it's still the best technical book on caving. And don't forget Al Warild's Vertical, which is also available online for free.
