The Eldon Library

Apparently, the Eldon P.C. have a substantial library. Ive never seen it before - because its all in boxes, stored in various peoples houses.

Since I joined the club, its been constant cry that it needs a decent home. The TSG have got theirs, in their club hut. The Orpheus have got theirs - in their hut.

The eldon dont have a hut!.

does anyone know if you can 'rent' shelf space in libraries etc.

Sensible suggestions/solutions  welcome.

I've made use of the Eldon library many times, when it was housed in Ben's flat in Buxton.  Your club library is very good!

Can I suggest you have a word with someone like Roy Paulson, who has spent many years dealing with the BCRA Library which is at Matlock.  He's a good bloke and I think you'll find he can give useful advice.

RE: putting the Eldon library actually into a library the only one which may take it on is the Derbyshire Local Studies Library at Matlock. I've used this facility for various research projects over the years and unlike a normal library, the security is good (you have to sign in etc). But the question has to be; do we want the Eldon library open to the public? I myself don't have a problem with this, but I would be loth for the library to lose its identity and just become a part of the records. It would need to be designated, within the Local Studies Library, as a separate section. If you want to try this route, Roy Paulson is indeed the man to contact.

do we want the Eldon library open to the public?

It's probably safe to give public access to it - isn't the Statute of Limitations 7 years? I'm referring to the various logs etc filled in by member in which some distinctly incriminating items were noted!

What about getting it scanned and made available on the web somewhere - EPC website, DCA website etc?

Plenty of ideas:

1  Tony Oldham has a large house and could store it for you on open shelves.

2  The Public Library in Buxton might welcome it into a Local Studies section.

3  The National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth.  This is one of the five copyright libraries.  The caving holding are not very well represented.

cheers tony, I think it would have to be derbyshire based though as this is where the active members are based and would want to access to it.

I've been meaning to phone around the various local libraries - buxton etc. but looks like Roy Paulson would be a good bet.

Cheers for the advice everyone  (y)

still open to suggestions. Does anyone know of a room in a public building - matlock/buxton that we could lend/hire for a nominal fee, that kind of thing

I think this is the way forward... but judging by the one box in my loft the task would be massive...

Scanning would be a monumental task. Its not just the odd journal - its books, magazines, other club journals, foreign journals etc etc. Hundreds of thousands of pages to scan.
Its just not practical.

However - a start would be to locate and scan (or take digital photos) of just the Eldon Journals.

& anyway the owners of the copyright of all that other stuff might just be a bit peeved if they found it on your website.  :-\

Well - that could get into a bit of a grey area. If the entire library was scanned and made available only to fully paid up members, who have access to the libraray anyway, is that a breach of copyright??

As an aside, how would the copyright holders find out if its only available to members of the club.

(in verymuch the same way that you dont know or dont care how many times Ive scanned in any book from my own collection). I might even have stuck them up on my own password protected website that nobody else knows about.

Because in an unguarded moment somebody will let it slip / mention it in the pub / etc.

Aye, libraries are only allowed to copy in a limited manner and for limited purposes.
It's called "fair use" and is limited to a maximum of around 10% of a publication and can only be used for certain purposes

Ignoring the more exotic problems. What about the mining museum in Matlock Bath? They seem to have a bit of space and it's obviously relevant.

Its beem mentioned many times in the past - but there is a real reluctance on the basis that items have 'walked' from there in the past.

I think you are talking at cross-purposes here. Sam's talking about the BCRA library in Matlock (Roy Paulson's fine collection) and Emgee's talking about the Mining History Museum in Matlock Bath. I might be wrong...

Ah - right. cheers JB.

emgee - didn't mean to knock your suggestion - all serious suggestions welcome.  (y)

I'll be giving Roy a call in the new year
