Highlights of the week so far

Maury Sough
Had a go at the choke where the water comes in, the choke needs a lot of work, but on the way out the bedding planes were investigated and after a small amount of digging 65mtrs of natural passage was discovered, which led to the base of an aven which was climbed the following day for 8mtrs but was blind.

Peak Cavern
A sump in the show cave by Lumbago walk was opened up and pumping has revealed about 75mtrs of passage to a T junction and a further 25mtrs of passage ending in sumps, one of these is being pumped today.

Bagshawe Cavern
Progress is being made at the dig at the end of the Hollywood Bowl series

Further update

Peak Cavern
Downstream Lumbago Sump dived for 55mtrs to -11mtrs ran out of line
Upstream sump being dived tomorrow.

Progress being made in Nixons Aven Dig and Galena chamber rift sump.

Mystery Mine
Sump at end of natural pumped, and access gained to chamber last entered 20yrs ago? Stooping passage continues on far side of chamber, to boulder blocking way on, can see passage continues beyond, bedding plane crawl in roof of chamber pushed for some way, before pump problems forced a hasty retreat. a return is planned.

Winnats Head Cave
Dig at top of Wigwam aven (upstream pitches), pushed for several mtrs to a tight point Can see several mtrs beyond.

Rowter Hole
Some progress being in made in dig, hauling system has been jigged, should be easier to remove spoil.

Various other projects have drawn blanks

PS: short of people midweek if anyone is around.

Kris De Ste Croix and Steve Rhodes have managed to squeeze a few days off work, heading down tomor after tea time/ wed night, if thats ok,?
no projects in mind but very happy to help anyone out, to be sent in the direction of some boulders that need moving or just to go caving.

We can stay till friday evening.

I should have posted this earlier.

Due to the fact that I had bad back I was limited to the amount of caving that I would liked to have done, but every one made allowances for this and I managed to get some time in underground. The rest of the resident cavers went off and did their own thing underground too. In the evenings teams arrived back from their endeavours to be fed and give account of passage measureless to man.
I had a great time.
Thanks from me go to Mark and Wendy for organising the event, to Claire for doing some of the cooking (all the meals were great) and lastly to the breakfast cooks who kept the tea urn full and bubbling. Looking forward to next year.

Did a return visit to do some photos in Mauray yesterday eve, to find that the dug-through collapse with the wriggly tin just beyond the rise with the chain (now sporting a rope) had run in - so no access to the main stope.

There was an amount of rocks in the passage approaching this point - I couldn't remember if they were there previously of if they're the result of someone tyring to reopen the passage...

Can anyone shed any light on this - or indeed on when the collapse happened?  I know it was passable with care last Autumn.

A few of us popped in yesterday to have a look (I've never been before, and it's very nice), but it still seemed pretty blocked without some heavy lifting, and with no knowledge of what's been done so far, or where it was previously stacked, we decided to leave it alone.

BTW, the yellow crowbar is now at the wriggly tin area, rather than further back, in case anyone thinks it's gone...;)

We were in mid June this year, and all was fine. A lot of rock had been brought down from the dig up the chain, seemingly blocking the way on, but it was easily passable by squeezing over the top then under the wriggly tin sheets. We intended to clear a bigger path through but ran out of time...

All the rock was dropped from above "quite" carefully, and most was small (about rugby balled sized, on average) so I'm very suprised that the way on has moved enough to become is blocked.

Phil, did you take any photos of it? Or have a go at digging out the floor? Was the tin bent?

Hi Rob

I was with Adam R, and behind him in the passage, so I didn't get to see 'the working face' as it were, but he said it was very tricky to get through without some re-stacking, though I suspect you would have gone for it ayway! The tin's not bent, but there was a large empty space behind it at the top of the pile - perhaps some rock has fallen back into the main passage? I've never been up there before, so it's difficult for me to know what it looked like before. Didn't have the camera with me, sadly, as it was only a quick trip to see it - would like to go back and do some though, definitely.

Cheers

Phil.
