OK, so what about top SRT trips suitable for a relative novice? I'll be in the Dales in June with the gf who's just learning SRT before heading out to the Berger in August. I was thinking of Sell Gill fossil route to start, then maybe Alum via Dollytubs? Any other suggestions? Something that's not going to be mobbed at the weekend would be good.

Bull pot in Kingsdale is :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D for SRT novices, plenty of interest in a very small distance with nothing too intimidating. It's probably worth getting there early (i.e before mid-day  ) if you want to make sure you get there first.

George. (are you going down the Berger with the Combined Services?)

Ah, yes, that's a good one. And we could always follow it with a pull through trip Swinsto to Valley.

Combined Services? that's sounds like a military expedition? Are armed forces cavers allowed overseas these days?

nahh, i'm going as part of a combined Irish/French trip. Got to the bottom as part of the Wessex/Devon trip in 2002, so am looking forward to taking it easy this time!

Never done Dis properly, been up the bottom two pitches and down to just past the ducks but not the bit inbetween, the bits I've seen look ok..

A tour around Henslers is good - through New Henslers into the Master Cave and then Mud Henslers to Mud Hall, Main Chamber then along S/South East passages - done it from Bar Pot and Flood Entrance (via Wades - does anyone ever use the other Entrance???).
Flood was by far the better trip! quite a nice pot in its own right.

Was at Bull today and it was empty at 2pm. Only a few cars parked at Valley Entrance too.. :?

Here's a list of Yorkshire caves that are a must for "sport" cavers. They aren't in any order either.

1. Gaping Ghyll's Far Waters and Far Country beyond the blowhole.
2. Hammer Pot to the bitter end.
3. Langcliffe Pot (via Oddmire) to the sumps. Take the orginal entrance if you want a nice long crawl.
4. Long Kin West for an almost completely vertical cave.
5. Dow-Providence through trip (although you can make it to the pub withthis one).

If you're gonna go underground, go underground!!

AKA Dowbergill Passage....one of the few Yorkshire trips i've done, but a very fine trip indeed.

AKA Dowbergill Passage
A fine trip indeed, I've done it once, Dow to Prov..

Which is the better way of doing it though? Dow-Prov or Prov-Dow... anyone have any thoughts on that??

I'd have to say that going in Providence and coming out of Dow is the better way. You don't have to get damp quite as quickly. The added bonus is that you are closer to the car at Park Rash (and hence the pub).

King Pot is probably high on my top trips too. Followed by Penyghent Pot... but not into the extensions... nasty tight stuff.

Ah yes, Penyghent Pot to the 'proper' sump.
As I recall when you get back to Niagara, it feels like the back of the trip is broken and you are nearly out!

I think my most memorable trip in the Dales was Beardies Birthday treat 'The Three Peaks and Three Pots' in 99.

Check out the link for the blow by blow account.

Isn't the Living Dead Extensions in Penyghent where you tore the hell out of that old Gul wetsuit I gave you?? That was a mighty fine wetsuit until you got hold of it. Iain also said that old Nicad I sold you is still holding up. It wasn't in Mexico with you was it??

No. That trip requires a full thick wet suit, I used my 12mm two piece semi-dry northern diver– excellent buoyancy for keeping your nose on the roof of the Gloom Doom Passage (the book says it is a 90m duck, but the survey reckons more like 400ft/122m!) :freak:.

Your old Gul wet suit saw a lot of action before it sadly passed away, reincarnated as useful padding though. As for that wet NiCad/Oldham conversion, it is still doing well after all this time, but it is heading for an electrolyte change when I get the courage up!

Mexico was done on my trusty Inox carbide in closed circuit - you can't boil water on an electric light!

Well, ive got to say that Rowten Pot is a fav of mine done it 3 times now

THIS WAS MY FIRST SRT TRIP thanks lads the club name will remain secure !

I will never foget 2 things about my first trip

1) The first rebelay (those wo have done it will no what i mean)

2) The monster swing out from the bottom of the 38m pitch !

Oh and not forgetting that i ended up deriggin as well, a real good introduction to caving and not being the slimest of cavers at the time it seemed to take about 20 prusuks before any head way was made up

Try Pippikin.  Original entrance to bottom.  Several hours digging.  Back same way.  Most knackering trip I've ever done.

PS All this was before link etc.

Good beginners SRT trips in the Dales:

I reckon:

Bull Pot  (y)
Pillar Holes (bit of a hike)  (y)
Sell Gill Holes (y) (dry weather)
Ireby Fell Cavern  (y) (dry weather)
Marble Steps  (y) (dry weather)
Dollytubs and shorter pitch(es) to bottom of Alum  (y)
Sunset Hole (dry weather)
Bull Pot of the Witches
Heron Pot (dry weather)
Out Sleets Beck Pot (dry weather)

There's bound to be loads more but I've not spent as much time in Yarkshire as I'd like,.... yet! (Have the glaciers and permafrost appeared yet or is it still light until after 4pm for a couple of weeks longer?..  ;) )

Juniper Gulf takes some beating, first you have to find it (and your way home in the fog/dark)
then you have traveses and a very big spay (at the bottom lashed pitch, then a little greasy climb down to the water, very exhilarating matey (y)

I hope you aren't suggesting that Dollytubs/Alum and Bull Pot, Kingsdale are wet weather venues!!

Pool Sink, Easegill is a pretty good trip for an SRT novice - I did it yesterday with somebody for a first SRT trip. Short pitches and straightforward pitch heads. Not in the wet though.

You can get away with doing Sell Gill when its wet, the dry route is obviously ok but the wet route is also an option when its wet, for novices though the dry route is best in wet with maybe the other route if they are competent..

Cheers, Hammy; my oversight. Thanks for pointing this out!
