All,

Anyone here familiar with the caves of Northern Ireland..The general area of NI including ROI rather than the actual country.
If so, and if I was go there and only had two and a half caving days, what caves would you recommend?
Also, any recommendations on where to stay(Caving hostels if any, general hostels or camping) and access?

TIA.

Main caving region is Co Fermanagh/Cavan.
There isn’t really a caving guy anymore but The Hub / Fermanagh Extreme is a cheap place to stay for cavers about 15-20 minutes from Florencecourt/Belcoo

Depends what you want in caving.

Good horizontal caves are Marble Arch Cave, Boho, etc
For a little extra challenge there’s Cascades

SRT caving: Shannon Cave, Noone’s

It’s quite a while since I caved in the area, but Tullyhona was always one of my favourites... once past the entrance squeeze. Pollnagossan is a really good sporting trip. I second all of PetWar’s suggestions and, particularly Ian Ball’s Prods Pot suggestion. Lots to go at. I’m sure you’ll have a great trip.

Hi Skippy. I concur that Tullyhona is a good trip (3mm wetsuit might be sensible if you get cold easily, although oversuit needed to stop it shredding). This all depends on if you can fit through the entrance squeeze (a slither over a slab at water level a few metres into the entrance). It is jolly tight so anyone a little broader chested will be excluded from here sadly. I'm 6ft, 32 waist and average build, and it was snug for me (I did take oversuit off on the outward journey which helped a lot). It's quite a physical trip (lots of crawling, thrutching, stooping), but very quirky in nature. No assess issues that I'm aware of (I don't remember asking anyone).

Marble Arch is probably one of the premium trips, but I think this needs permission arranging from the show-cave?

Noon's Hole, no permission that I'm aware of, but in my opinion this is just a bit of a disappointing trip (although the entrance is good). Lots of mud and crawling. I think the further reaches might be better.

Shannon Cave is the 'biggie' at the moment and some mega long (9+ hour) trips to the far reaches available.

My own personal suggestion if anyone in your group is looking for a nice easy trip in some spectacular passage with a few good formations and out in time for ice cream is Pollnagollum of the Boats:

No permission needed (that I remember), a very short walk from the car, a scramble down a large boulder choke, a short swim across a lake (or an inflatable boat) and then several hundred metres of stomping in outstanding large river passage a bit like the stuff in the far reaches of Little Neath (if you're familiar with that). Was my favourite trip on our last visit to the Fermanagh area.

As for accommodation, the Kiltyclogher Holiday Centre is where we stayed (a popular venue with cavers I believe), cheap and an excellent venue. I don't know if it's still open though or whether Covid saw that off - I didn't get the impression it was ever busy!

For a quick scenic through trip I recommend Whitefathers Cave. The far end does sump in very high water but it is very sporting then!
