So, what would be a suitable venue for him?

Out Sleets Gill!

Seriously though, he looks a bit crumbly. Probably Yordas would be as much as could be expected...

Forget Yordas, get him down Quaking Pot. In for a penny, in for a pound...

Apparently a 65th birthday was celebrated by one of the team during the last DCRO callout - so how do we define old? I also know of members of the Coffin Dodgers Caving Club who regularly spend their winter fuel allowance on new caving kit, or towards trips to the Himalaya. GK might be quite a sprightly old goat for all we know - perhaps a BASE jump in to Los Golondrinas(?) might wake him up a bit...

Did not some MP a few years ago want to charge for rescue and started trying to put a bill through? I am sure he was taken caving by politically (small P) aware members of the CRO and made aware of the reality of the situation, such that his bill was dropped?
Cant recall the details at present, but I am sure there are some peeps out there who do.
Perhaps taking GK underground in a suitable environment for an old codger like him and showing him what it can be all about and how much is to be had would be a better way forward?

Didn't the MRO take an MP underground at the same time?

By the way, Mr Kaufman's exact phrase was "He's like somebody who goes potholing and then relies on others to risk their lives to save him from being foolish."

Help that helps

Thanks Robert I think it does.

When you look at what Mr Kaufman actually said he was not deriding potholers at all, just potholers that rely on others to save them from being foolish, not quite sure what that means. I think that by singling out potholing he is probably acknowledging how dangerous it is.
I still do not like his choice of words as, in my opinion, they do reinforce a negative stereotypical image of caving.

Darkplaces, stop being such an antagonistic twat!

It was a Private Member's Bill and stood very little chance of reaching the statute book.

It followed a New Year rescue of Croydon Caving Club and others from Simpson's Pot.

Unfortunately it's a jpeg so you can't cut'n paste from it.

I took my MP caving last September. I got a thank you on House of Commons letterhead.

P.S. The Neil Moss stuff was a result of being asked the question "Has anyone ever got stuck underground?"... the rest is self-explanatory.

Yes, he has; I believe he's actually done a fair few decent trips - but on the day I was involved it was a straightforward event

I've got a letter from my MP who said that he has written to Mr Kaufman drawing his attention to my annoyance and will get back to me when/if Mr Kaufman responded.

It has been pointed out to Sir Gerald what a nerk he is. (although I agree with his opinions on Mr Norman "happy-clapper" Kember).

Via my MP for Bradford West, I've got a reply from Mr Kaufman

Should I now be annoyed that he thinks I live in Bristol?

I feel a T shirt design coming on.

Nice that he at least apologised. So offer him and or your local MP a trip underground :)

Wow, what a result.
I wonder if Tony Blair will appologise for a very long list of things I have here?
I do think this country would be better if more people DID complain about things a lot more.
So my silent phone call last Sat may not have been from the political police after all!
