water levels over the bank holiday weekend

Morning all.

I'll be travelling down to Derbyshire this weekend with the Craven for a spot of caving..  My first trip away from Yorkshire .
Being totally unfamiliar with the hydrology of the area I was wondering how the change in weather was would affect our proposed trips through Giants on Saturday and Peak on Sunday?

Cheers,

Things are quite dry, but they've been much drier. Everywhere "normal" in Giants and Peak will be open at the moment.

Hi Simon,

It looks like there may be a few heavy showers in the next day or two..then intermittent light rain is forcast over the weekend. The trips that are planned should be fine.Geof and Andrew have picked the three classic caves for your first foray into the Peaks.Giants is an absolute belter with a bit of every thing(bar a large pitch). The 'crabwalk' is rather unique for the distance it covers.
See you Saturday morning at TSG if you are about....we will be starting pretty early.

If I recall Gaints had a 20m ish pitch in it, was it called Geology pot?

Geology is about 45 ft(in old money)...not what I'd construe as a large(ish pitch)...But I suppose thats wide open to debate ;)

45 ft is tiny as far as most are concerned. Compare it to the likes of Day Shaft @240ft or Snake Mine @ 280. JH offers better pitchs!
Anyway, you'd be sensible to pack your wetsuit, even if you decide not to use it. Furry is good for most things Derbyshire....  except Sheep sha**ing.  ;)

The last few times I /we've been in Giants it was too dry. when there's a good flow at Garlands it feels so much more of a trip.
I'm repeatedly told by many that the windpipe doesn't sump these days.
A bit of rain will improve the trip (y)

A couple of us were at the bottom of Leviathan this morning, taking up the new hopper for the water-diversion piping, and the main streamway was very low - a good 30 cm below the first Bung wall. That said, it's snowing now in Sheffield (1.49am), and tonight could be a very wet one, so it could well go up a bit in the next day or so. Can't imagine it would stop a Giants or Peak trip though.

There's been a great deal of snow overnight, several roads around here (Flagg) are blocked with drifts or abandoned cars though the electric engineers managed to get through and give us back our power! However, it's melting underneath and will probably go pretty quick, so I wouldn't be at all surprised to see it having a noticeable effect on water levels this coming weekend.

And it is still snowing in the White Peak and our power is going on and off in Winster.

From the Met Office Website for the Peak District http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/loutdoor/mountainsafety/peakdistrict/peakdistrict_latest_weather.html:
Friday

Cloudy with light rain or drizzle spreading from the north, accompanied by extensive hill fog. Light northwesterly winds increasing to strong. Less cold with a thaw developing for a time.

Saturday

Dry with variable rather cloudy skies at first then sunny intervals developing, but cold with a light northerly winds. The freezing level near 200 metres.

Sunday

Cloudy and milder with light rain or drizzle at times, especially in the west. Breezy.

So with the thaw as well there should be more water around. You can tell there's a Bank Holiday coming. :)

Still snowing in Winster. I just saw a really good avalanche off the roof of the house opposite!

Anybody ventured out onto any of the roads e.g. round Castleton way? Are they passable at all?
Roads in and around Tideswell village are passable in 4x4s and old 2 wheel drives only. Not sure about beyond there, mainly cos i've got a new 2 wheel drive and got stuck on the main road A623 so turned around...!! Snow still coming down heavy.
