Water levels?

P8 last night - very low water. Sump 1 still roofed but only just. Looks as if it will need digging when it does unroof, which I think was the case when we surveyed to Sump 4 in the 1989 drought. I recall that on that occasion it looked as though someone had dug for the first couple of metres when we went through. Anyone remember?

I was involved in digging through when it dried out in the late 90s

I'm surprised that the recent rain has not made a difference. Halleys sump is on my list of things to dive, I had assumed it was likely to have filled up again

I remember one evening in 1989 going along to sump 1 and hearing it making almost-unroofed type noises. We went back a day or so later and it was negotiable. I don`t think we were  the first through but I don`t now remember seeing any evidence of digging. I do remember a small pool part way through with a lot of (I was told) freshwater shrimp in it. I also remember being impressed with the passages beyond up to sump 4. It would be nice to see them again.

Morning all,

In P8 last night, very low water levels in the stream and the Upstream Sump down very low.

The downstream sumps however, are full to the brim again. The recent rain must be having some effect.

Passed Stoney Middleton this evening and Carlswark Resurgence was giving it some welly! Water gushing forth and not only going into the culvert under the road, but also onto the road as well.

I'll post some pics when I've processed them.

Amazing (and a little frightening) to think we crawled right through that sump last summer. Mind you, it'll be a lot cleaner inside now...

There was enough flow that it took a bit of effort to force my way in last night.
Strangely getting out wasn't really any easier apart from knowing where i was due to the flow going past me

But i have climbed on that wall and to think the water comes driving out like that is pretty  impressive.

What i find bizzare is that it has been 2 1/2 days since any proper rain here, and yet the resurgence was still flowing strongly at 5pm when i drove past it today. Going down a lot slower than i expected....

I've popped down there regularly over the the last few years with groups (there is a very entertaining duck) and always run down ahead to check water levels. I have had my feet wet almost instantly on quite a few occasions when I would have been convinced the water levels low enough to at least get into the main chamber or even the passage.
I believe that the lower series will stay full for quite some time after heavy rain and is very slow draining. I've not been lucky enough yet to be down there as the water is rising to see how quickly it does so.

The draining of that particular bit of cave is interesting. I imagine a lot of the water will seep out through the infill from the old tip on the surface and collect in some so far unknown draininage channel below the road level. A few years ago a detected a gurgle al the lowest point in the passage to the sump. Water was running away down a small gap between the roof and the mud bank. I spent several hours turning this slot into a a liquid chocolate pond without any conclusive idea about where the water went to. I think there is a little more down there than is currently seen.

The hole in Oyster Chamber that links down to the Resurgence Entrance had water ponded to within about 3 feet of the lip of the pitch. The main cave on the same day as the above film was quite drippy!
