Water Tracing Materials

Hi all. i've got some interesting short range (< 1.5km) water tracing jobs to do in the Manifold valley. I've got enough Fluorescein to do a couple, but was wondering if anyone had got any Fluorescein or Rhodamine B going spare that they could get to me. (Burton-on-Trent or Wetton.)

I can get some Fluorescein off eBay, but haven't got much dosh ATM, so any help would be appreciated, thanx. (y)

Example tests for those who know the area are:-

Weir swallet to Redhurst Swallet. (100m.)

Redhurst  Swallet to Ladyside Pot / Ladyside Wood Resurgences / Magic Mushroom Resurgence. (Maybe 1km.)

Darfar Pot  to Ladyside Pot / Ladyside Wood Resurgences / Magic Mushroom Resurgence. (Maybe around 1.5km.)

Ladyside Wood Resurgences to Magic Mushroom Resurgence / Weag's Bridge Resurgence. (Maybe around 0.5km.)

Redhurst area to Weds Pot (300m & 20 mins) / T-Pot / Project Pot is all proved. Ladyside Pot to Weag's Bridge Resurgence, (maybe around 0.5km), is proved. (2hr flow through time.)

Have to catch the river in the right conditions for these various tests, but this variable weather is proving a possible good time to be able to do this work...

Regards, Mel.

Don't forget to let the relevant authorities know you intend to do this; wouldn't want to turn someone's water supply green without them expecting it!

Or worse, screw up somebody else's water tracing experiment...

there are no other people doing water tracing experiments in this area, esp. given we are the only club working in the area...

Not just clubs though, water companies, environment agency/Natural England, universities, etc. also do traces for a variety of reasons.
Not saying you would screw any tracing experiments up, just that there may be parallel traces going on that might be affected, also they could screw up your traces as well. That's why it is good practice to consult with relevant authorities first (although if other tracers don't consult then your trace may still get screwed by others...)

Les/Graham. I do wish you wouldn't preach. I am well aware of the issues, but:-

1. I having been caving / digging / doing conservation work in the area for over 30 years!

2. The major landowner is the National Trust for which I am a volunteer and I will be consulting with the South Peak Estate Manager (who I know well) beforehand about any potential issues.

3. I am the DCA Conservation Officer.

4. I am the SSSI area rep for the area to Natural England so am aware of anything they might be doing, which is nothing! They haven't got the funds.

5. I also have contacts within the Environment Agency.

So as you can see, I do know what I am doing. Thanx Ian for the helpful PMs. There is a lot of important stuff to be found out here about the underground water flows as the area has a very complex hydrology which we've still only just scratched the surface of.

Regards, Mel.

You may be aware of the issues but others reading your original post may not and may feel emboldened by it to go chucking stuff around the place willy nilly.

Cavers have got form on doing this before; small industrial estates, village water supplies and ... gulp ... a brewery have all been affected by this sort of stuff in the past.

As has the Holy Well in North Wales, now that did cause a stink when it turned green!

Mel, I think what Graham is trying to say is that their posts were more for the education of others reading this thread and not necessarily personal, I don't know if they know you or the area you are working in but I know both and have every confidence that things will be done "properly".

If that is the Holy Well at Hollywell you would have difficulty turning it green as the spring was drained when the Milwr Tunnel was driven and now appears to be recirculated tap water. I remember going around the Shrine with Doug Nash in the 1980's who immediately said it smelt like tap water, later research proved him to be correct.

I have some dye Mel but would suggest you talk to JG before starting any experiments.

what about exactly Julie, these won't be detector based tests, they will be visual and I know the area a lot more than he does plus I have done several successful tests already...

John might get someone to do it for you without worrying about turning everywhere green and upsetting people. You won't know unless you ask him.
