Welsh mines rescue

Sadly now two bodies discovered. Heres hoping that the other two are ok.

Deepest sympathy to the families involved.

It really brings it home that what we treat as a hobby actually is life and death for some people.

Just don't know what to say.

I'm not really a caver, I want to be but I'm not as yet.  Once I've got a few things out of the way and under my belt I am going to really crack on and get involved.  I'd like to get to the stage where I'd actually be of some use if this sort of thing occured around me, as opposed to someone stood there trying to keep out of the way.

so sad  :( hugs to the families

And Lisa - from my understanding from friends on cave rescue teams here, people without caving skills are still of use especially in large rescues - need people above ground for help with communication, getting food and water to people, etc. Lots of support roles above ground which have no requirements for any caving skills.

This definitely touches home! I feel so sad right now!

We do it for fun but these guys were there because they needed it as their living...very sad indeed.

Deep and sincere condolences to all the relatives and friends involved.

Just flicked to the beeb hoping they'd found the last guy hiding somewhere in an air pocket, but... so disappointed for all the families.  There's another stranger in a different county, country even, thinking of you all.

Mine Rescue

The team was called out at 3.15pm on Thursday. After some confusion we established that our diving expertise was required.

At 00.31 Friday morning, 4 of our divers were committed, two to dive and two to act as cover.

The two lead divers passed the flooded section and discovered the body of one of the missing miners. They then proceed to a blockage of debris and wooden pit props caused by the inrush of water from the working heading.

There was no response to calling and shouting and the divers returned to base.

At 03.15 this morning (Friday) all team members were off site ? there being nothing more the team could do. Pumping continues and as soon as a reasonable air space is exposed the mines rescue teams will be able to clear and stabilize before access to the old workings above the accident site is possible and to recover the dead miner. There is still some hope that the three missing miners reached a safe place.

It is notable that the statutory bodies on-site allowed a voluntary team to conduct a underwater search.
To my knowledge this is the first time the South & Mid Wales Cave Rescue Team has been called to, and has been used on a incident in a working coal mine.

We will compile a fuller report when the incident is over.

All 4 of the missing miners have now been discovered dead. Some of the team knew them which brings it a little closer to home. We can only offer our condolences and trust that the very hard guys in Mines Rescue complete the recovery without incident.

Jopo for the SMWCRT.

Thanks Jopo for the post.  I had been wondering who the divers had 'belonged' to so to speak.

Very sad affair and my sympathies lie with the families who must have suffered an agonising couple of days.

Respect also to all those involved in the search and recovery.

This week's "Week In Week Out" (topical Welsh news program) was a view of this tragedy from the rescuers side.

It's well worth a look - catch it on iPlayer but only for the next 6 days.
