What length should my first length of SRT rope be??  My non club caving trips will be Derbyshire way and nothing too technical to start.

Also Surveys, where do I get the most up to date surveys from for Derbyshire area? can i buy a bundle from a club or is HnH the only place?

Sounds like you probably want a 24m rope (after initial shrinkage). This allows for shrinkage in the first year and will still give you a rope suitable for most shortish Derbyshire pitches, as well as doubling up as a lifeline for a standard 10m ladder.

How much shrinkage to allow for is a difficult question because, in my experience, it varies a lot from rope type to rope type and seems to have little to do with what the manufacturers claim.

A good start would be to look in any of the guide books for the sort of trips you might want to do. A very non technical trip would be Water Icicle shaft which is 32m and just the one pitch, so you can see the answer isn't easy.

I assume you're on a budget? Chris's search will give you some background on rope lengths.

Well you've had some useful replies (ignoring the flippant) but it does somewhat depend on which trips you have in mind. With a single rope obviously you would be restricted to those with one pitch. 40 mteres would do for Water Icicle Close Cavern. For other long single pitches (Knotlow Cavern Engine Shaft of Whalf Pipe Engine Shaft or Rowter Hole) your looking at around 70 metres.

Get hold of the Peak Rigging Guide and then decide on which trips you would like to do as this will assist you in your choice.

Of course another option is to join a caving club and then you would have the pick of a collection of ropes available to use.

Caving Supplies in Buxton also sell surveys.
