That edit of yours if you look in the shadows doesn't have the texture that the one from raw does and that's why I say its important for cave photography. It might sound snobish but it is just better in poor lighting conditions.
Something to think about if you have a camera with dual slots put it into mirror mode (or whatever your manufacturer calls it). Cards do die especially ones in cameras as they get so many writes and its always a shame to lose a load of images especially as you cant just reshoot them. I use 32gb Sandsisk cards and I've only once filled them when shooting a climbing competition for Moon.
