The panel has chosen "Dream Time Chamber - Lathkill Head Cave" by Anthony Matthews as the winning photo. This is a very nicely exposed photograph of a chamber with many features of scientific interest. However, the rather enigmatic caption "We were there on scientific business" hides the real significance of the photograph. Dream Time was found in the early 1990s after extensive digging led by the late "Ben" Bentham and Dave "Moose" Nixon. It was initially accessible only from the "Top Entrance" and later from Ricklow Cave, both being arduous routes only possible at time of low water. To facilitate further upstream exploration, and to permit access by scientists who were not experienced cavers, permission was obtained for a new entrance to be excavated into the top of Dream Time. This has subsequently been used for studies of geomorphology, hydrology and aquatic invertebrates. Access is still restricted to those engaged in scientific work and as this includes original exploration this represents a positive synergy of what may be termed 'recreational' and 'scientific' caving.
