Winnats Head survey

Was wondering if anyone knew if there existed (or - better - had a copy of!) a comprehensive, high-grade survey or set of data for this cave. Would be interesting to see how it's various wierdnesses relate to the Peak/Speedwell system - and to see if the digs at the top end really are about to bring you up under a cattle grid, or could break in caverns measureless to mice....

Unfortunately I haven't got any of the data you requested but if you manage to get hold of anything I'd be very interested in it.

The survey work on the Peak/Speedwell system is ongoing but I've also now got a draft copy of a 2d topographical underground/overground view of the entire Castleton area.

I could tell you exactly how far from the cattle grid it is.

I too have always been interested in finding a survey.. It was surveyed by the Eldon I think so in theory - there ought to be a survey kicking around in our library. I'll have an ask around and see.

Only got a hard copy no survey data.

Shortly after the find of Fox chamber I had a chat with My Revell (Bagshaw) and he was convinced he had already been in the chamber. He was down a mine and crawled though to an open (chamber). He came in through a muddy passage, short standing height passage with boulder floor that opened to large chamber with large rocks littering the floor and gaps down between them plus small phreatic tube leading out the opposite side too tight. That is a good explanation of main chamber not Fox chamber - so I dug the clay filled choke at the end of the passage going off main chamber until it got lower and harder going. There was no sign of mining type debris and there was more pressing things to dig at the time. just thought the info may help.

Do you know who surveyed it..

Im sure someone once told me that Mark Loftus had the survey (and or data).

(hence my wanting of contact details)

Just spoken to Lofty, very helpful.

Seems like Disley Underground Group (DUG) were responsible for most of the surveying. Lofty was on a surveying trip but doesn't have any of the data - or a survey.

Pete Ward is the man apparently, it was he who did most of the surveying, and drew up the servey... so if we can find Pete, we might find the data.

Spoke to Pete tonight, very helpful and had a good chat about the history of the exploration of that end of things.

He'll dig out the survey data at some stage (buried in boxes somewhere) at get it to us, which is great.

Good work Sam.

All this illustrates precisely why we need a central data base for as much of the surveyed cave data as we can.

I'm sure that there's reams of field notes hiding out there which will never again see the light of day.

Just to reiterate what I brought up in the 'Castleton Caves survey project" thread. If anyone has any data of any caves (particularly in the Castleton area, but it can be anywhere in the PD) can you please make yourself known and we can take it from there.
