British Caving Library during the coronavirus outbreak
« on: March 20, 2020, 01:06:45 pm »
During the coronavirus outbreak, for the moment the British Caving Library will still be dealing with queries received by email or phone to the usual contacts.

However we cannot accept visitors to the Library at present.

This is, of course, subject to any further government rulings on travel to workplace by personal transport, etc.

Please also check http://facebook.com/BritishCavingLibrary/ for any further notices about the operation of the library.

Following government rulings on travel to workplace by personal transport, etc., for the moment the British Caving Library has had to halt its operations on site.  (We had hoped to be able to continue by staff working alone at the Library on different days but we can no longer do this.)

However, if we possibly can, we will still be dealing with queries received by email to the usual contacts.  We will do our best to help using our own private resources and by links with other caving libraries.

Clearly there can be no visitors to the Library at present.

Please also check http://facebook.com/BritishCavingLibrary/ for any further notices about the operation of the library.

Linking the power of Libraries during COVID-19

The British Caving Library is calling on all caving clubs whose libraries are kept at the librarian’s home address, as apposed to at a club HQ location which cannot be reached at present.

Could you help the British Caving Library, which is currently out of bounds to the Library staff?  We would like to hear from you if you feel you have the facilities which would enable us to deal with enquiries emailed to BCL.

If you think you can help, please PM Jenny.

How big a collection are you looking for? Minion has a large personal collection and I doubt is the only one out there

We often get enquiries which simply ask for a scan of a known article to be emailed to the enquirer - so anyone with a home collection or a club library which includes some of the "standards" could help out.  In which case someone who both has the publication and is able to email on a scan would be a great help.

On other occasions we are asked to look up references where the enquirer is not quite sure of the source but, as we have a good collection of publications at BCL, we can often make an inspired guess and come up with the goods.

If we just had contacts for other libraries or collections held in people's home which we could circulate to ask for help to answer a query which we can't deal with through BCL at present, that would be great.

Does that make sense?

Or maybe post on here any enquiries as well and see who can help?

Might be interesting for the rest of the forum and give more topics to contribute on
