The only problem is they both take different batteries, AA for the HM23 and 18650 for the HM65. so you couldn't use the batteries from one in the other if the light died on you which is a downside. I would use the HL30 as a main light if push came to shove, the only downside in it is the hinge is quite weak, so when I wear mine now the light always flops down. I don't think i'd be able to put up with this on a main light, but for a backup it's fine. and if i had to use it as a main light I would bind the thing up with electrical tape to stop it flopping.

Suggest you speak with Inglesport and/or Starless River and look for at alloy-body headtorches on elastic strap.
I have used Fenix HL55 for a few years, which has been great. Robust, waterproof, and the 18650 batteries to easy to source/charge/replace. Can be used on or off helmet. Now superseded by HL60R, which is rechargeable.
The smaller HL50 (now superseded by HM50R) would be very adequate for starting out and is more handy for camping/running/backup.
It is not necessary to spend as much as ?100

I would be cautious of any numbers quoted by Fenix (you can search various discussions on here). Most people seem very happy with the build quality and reliability of Fenix lights, but the output data they quote is not particularly scientific or useful.Lewis1985 said:
