No, but getting slightly closer again. This bit's natural but it is accessed via a mine.

It's erm...Townhead Vein. Sadly no - Al's closer. Much closer, but still not there ;)

It looks a lot like  Yatestoop or Horse Buttocks Mine although they both seem a bit obscure for the Wezzit . There are similar features in many mines between Elton and Masson.

Old Jant mine?

Which is probably in CoPD as part of Youd's Level? (not got it to hand)

Fishes - yeah, I wouldn't have inflicted any of the Winster mines as it's not fair - though I do have some ;)

But that last guess is close - real close. The clue is the choke...

That's close enough for me - it's actually Gentlewoman's Pipe, in the large natural chamber to the right (south) of the entrance shaft, and the choke is collapse from the quarry face which is a few metres directly above it - over to you.

But where did this passage go? Pre-mining I mean, as it's all phreatic. It would be large enough to drive a car down were it not for all the sediment ;)

Was this on the pre-quarrying through trip route, or another passage? If Gentlewomans Shaft is permanently sealed, could a route into the quarry be dug out to restore access?

I'd guess it's beneath the backfill in the quarry.  :'(

That would a big project! I thought it was closer to the open part with just a couple of meters of debris at the foot of the wall...  :o

The crop of the survey (by Roger Flindall, John Swain, Andrew Hayes and Jerry Corson) shows the photo location and direction of view, with the grey shading the quarry floor, so it's right under the north wall. All that stuff around the base of the shaft is natural and half-full of dry sediment. But I guess that's for another thread ;)

I would assume it is related to the same development seen in Mason, eg around Plank Pool. It might be related to the natural seen in Jug Holes, as the pipe vein looks to be the same but offset by a fault? From the survey extract it would appear the blockage is in the lower quarry without too much overburden. Job for radio location and careful surveying...

Wezzit's been quiet for a while, so I guess Zomjon doesn't have a pic to post - I'll jump in with this, it is in CoPD and the location of a very old dig but seldom visited, probably because it's a bugger to find the entrance to it!

Jeez, thought it would last a bit longer than that! Right you are T, it's Old Woman's House Cave, archaeologically excavated in the early 20th century and another example of a rift cave - lidar image below, entrance just to the left of the marker.
