Also you can just get a car key cut without the radio/transponder in - I've used https://www.keysinthepost.com/. You just send a photograph and they cut you the key. You have to actually put the key in the keyhole (so no good for these modern keyless cars) and it won't start the engine, but it also doesn't matter if you swim through a sump with it.

The downside to this is most insurance companies won't pay out for stolen vehicles if the key is left in it (however sneakily hidden!).

On this point...

I've just been thinking that I have never ever taken my keys/phone into a cave.  Phone is always tucked away in car somewhere and the car key hidden somewhere between car and cave, or just inside the cave entrance, or next the car in a wall or some such.   Everyone on the trip knows where each others car keys are in case of emergency.

Granted, most of my caving has historically been in evenings mid week less likely to be 'spotted' hiding your key.  Even then, most caving spots are fairly remote and if your subtle about it, shouldn't be a problem.

Certainly one less darren drum to cart about the cave.

Luckily for me I have a extremely old Landrover so the key could be in a pocket all day not that it is but it wouldn’t affect the key unless it was snapped in half , I haven’t done a huge amount of caving I plan to do a lot more next year I shall be taken my phone for pictures at rest stops or amazing features,  it won’t be coming out the drum a lot like it does in a mine .  I am waiting for the 6L drum to arrive and then I shall try my peli case copy inside of it with some towels for my set up . Fingers crossed it will be as good as the 3.6L the design is the same so I am sure it will be
