Caving models
« on: May 24, 2016, 03:45:47 pm »
Hello all!

I had my first experience caving the weekend before last in the Mendips and really loved it! Looking forward to much more exploring in the future :-)

The trip I was on was part of an expedition with a number of artists/surveyors working on caves/confined spaces. Talking to our guide, he mentioned there may be some people in the community willing to share geomatic data relating to caves around the mendips/other caves. I'm specifically in search of 3D images (point clouds/meshes), as I'm trained in their interpretation/processing - if I could be pointed in the right direction for places to ask I'd be very grateful!

For Peak District data you could see if 'Rob' or 'Moose' will respond on here.

There's probably not much available in the way of true 'point clouds', cave surveys are done as legs and splays at the start/end of each leg. I believe a point cloud was done of Titan in the Peak - a truly huge cavern, and one of Gaping Gill Main Chamber in the Dales.

Other than that I'm not sure, there will be some stuff from abroad, possibly Hang Son Doong.

Sounds interesting, do you have any examples of your artistic data interpretation work to show off? I'm interested to see what ideas you have with the data.

Oh, just thought there are some 3D models - lidar point clouds and optical image overlay of some sandstones caves, don't know about the data availabilty:

There have been a number of 3d surveying projects, one of note is the China 3D project, which led to a discovery of many more meters of Cave Passage.

A good person to speak to would probably be 'BADLAD' as I believe he was involved in some of the 3d surveys.

I think There was also a 3d scan of some Seacaves in Scotland, you might be able to find a video of this on Youtube. but someone may also know those who were involved.

Our team has done quite a bit of 3D work around the world.  This link to Nat Geo gives a glimpse of some of our scans from China.

This is a little closer to homein Sir Francis level mine

Or a rough draft of Gaping Gill

All these begin as raw scan data, point clouds, mesh, etc
PM me if you want more details.
Posts crossed - thanks alastairgott

Hi guys, thanks so much for the quick and informative responses!

Tommy - Those Nottingham models look great, I'll try and find out who I can talk to about access, thanks very much for the link! While the project is in it's early stages, Flora, one of the members, has done some work on subterranean spaces and caves with Brazilian colleagues, examples here and here. She's having an artificial cave made for an upcoming exhibition too!

Alistair - Cheers for the info about the Scottish sea caves. One of the group has done some acoustic surveys in and around sea caves on the south coast and would be particularly interested, will look them up now!

Badlad - The models are incredible! The size of the caverns are astonishing and at a different scale from we were introduced to. The quality of the textures is really great too, I think something like the gaping gill dataset would be really useful to us if it could be provided - I'll send you a PM now!
