Hidden Earth try dive pool sessions

It's a bit last minute, but there will be a try diving pool session at Hidden Earth this year. Wondered what it's like to breathe and swim underwater? Open water diver wondering what cave diving equipment is like to use? Just curious? We'll have both open water equipment and cave diving gear...

Visiting Canadian cavers need your help!

I've offered to help out a group of Canadian cavers who are visiting the Dales, June 8-11 and want to do some caving. They are staying at the YSS. I am able to do some midweek caving with them and have suggested Ireby Fell Cavern, Swinsto or Simpsons and GG (probably Flood Entrance to the Main...

    Marilyn WARNING LOOSE BOULDERS!

During the BPC GG winch meet we received reports of a dangerously poised loose boulder near the top of Niagra pitch. This area has been getting eroded back over time which had exposed an elongated boulder about 50 cm x 50 cm cross section, with about 70 cm hanging out of the loose fill wall...

    Melvyn Barton

I've just been given a copy of Britain Underground (1953) by a friend. It was obviously someone's 'working copy' many years ago and has hand written notes etc written inside. The name inscribed inside is Melvyn Barton and an address in Skipton, plus the letters S.C.C. (perhaps Skipton Caving...

    Lost at Bull Pot Farm

If anyone is up at the Farm could you have a quick look for a Land Rover mudflap please? I was parked on the left as you approach the farm, just beyond the sharp right turn where the bridleway to Barbondale goes off on the left. It may have a come off anywhere, but I did reverse up to the wall...

    Berger 2012

Anyone know of any teams going out to the Gouffre Berger in 2012? I fancy celebrating my 'coming of (caving) age' (21 years sous terre) with a real classic. So, anyone willing to accept a guest? Cheers, Dave

High Hill Cave + Fissure, Settle

Has anybody actually been to High Hill Cave near Settle. It's in Northern Caves and shown near the road from Settle to Kirkby Malham, at the top of the steep hill out of Settle. The 6 figure grid ref is in a field with no sign of the "clearly visisble entrance". We serached the hillside above...

Underground Worlds; caving talk in the Dales

To raise money for the Village Institute, Sue and I are presenting a talk on some of our trips over the last decade or two... From Ingleborough to Vancouver Island, it's a tale of cordless drills, diving gear, helicopters, bears (beers?), cougars, lumberjacks, an incompetent Spanish cave diving...

    The Hollow Mountains

My next door neighbour has just given me a small book entitled "The Hollow Mountains; the story of man's conquest of the caves and potholes of north-west Yorkshire". I've never come across this book before. It was published in 1961 and is by W R Mitchell. Has anyone seen this book before or...

    Dales DistoX training day

Just a quick public thanks for the efforts put in to teach us non-geeks the rudiments of electronic cave surveying and drawing. Footleg (or is it Footloose as I heard at one point?) and Co travelled a long way and I for one learned a lot (although it feels like a little compared to the experts!)...

    Cave symbols for Illustrator

I have been told that there is a set of standard cave survey symbols available as swatches for use with Adobe Illustrator. Anyone know if this is true, and if so does anyone have the file they could send me? Cheers, Dave

    Survey training required

The BPC are having an expedition training weekend for Club members in July in Yorkshire. Various topics are being covered, but I was wondering if anyone experienced in electronic surveying would fancy a weekend all expenses paid to demonstrate and train on electronic surveying practice...

    Bosch drill charging

Is anyone aware of a 12v charger (ie runs off a car battery) for a 24v Bosch drill? I have an auto charger that runs off 12v but charges up to 36v at work, but they are pretty pricey. (Bantam BC-8) Anyone know of a cheaper option? Cheers, Dave

    Lost watch.

I have lost my Traser watch. I got it as a present from t'wife during the Doux de Coly expedition in '98 and although a bit old and battered is of great sentimental value. I last saw it at the Joint Hole parking spot in Chapel Le Dale two weeks ago, and it may have fallen out of my car whilst...

Bosch GBH 24 VRE SDS chuck

Does anyone have a bosch drill that''s dead? I have acquired a Bosch GBH 24 VRE at a good price, but it has a key type chuck instead of an SDS+ I think most of the Bosch drills will have the same fitting, but it must be the quick change type where you can pull a collar to remove the chuck. Beer...

    DistoX...last chance?

I've put this on the main board so more people see it than on the Surveying board. The DistoX is an electronic surveying tool based on the Leica Disto A3. The conversion board, from a Swiss caver adds an electronic compass and clino to the Disto measuring function, plus adds a datalogger and...

    BCA expedition insurance

Has anyone used the 'BCA' expedition insurance recently? I've just rung Towergate who are the contact on the BCA site, and they had no idea of the existance of an expedition policy. The nice lady there is looking into it for me, but they certainly seem to have no policy in place as such. Does...
