On a more serious note, that iron bar thingy reminds me of something I've seen somewhere. Could it have been wedged or set in a gap to form a step?

The massive gravity there would probably mean you'd need a thicker rope than usual. Maybe you would need that big hole in the middle of your descender?

Could you use it as a descender? Clip onto your harness through one of the holes and thread the rope through enough of the others to be able to control your descent?
