<sigh>  meant to be taking some noobs caving this weekend. Had hoped to go round the churns on Saturday and great douk on the Sunday. Up here in Sunderland its rained for four solid days

I'm guessing that its not exactly been dry in the dales either.....

I think I'll have to get up early and poke my head underground before going to the faff and expense of hiring kit for 6 people....

I don't think it's quite as wet here as you might imagine from listening to weather forecasts. What follows is NOT definitive advice on the wisdom (or otherwise) of your proposed trips this weekend - but it may help a bit. (It'd be good if others commented, either to agree or disagree with my last paragraph below!)

If you want to get a pretty good idea of conditions there are various useful online sources. The Environment Agency website has the facility to search through real time hydrographs of all the major rivers (including the Ribble, which is probably most useful for the Alum Pot system). From these you can tell if the flow is increasing or dedreasing. The "Settle Hydro" (Google to find) allows you to see a webcam picture of the wier on the Ribble at Settle - this is incredibly useful. The Cave Diving Group's "VisBot" (see website) gives rainfall amounts at strategic places over the last 7 days - the most relevant to your query are those posted by Richard Kavanagh (who, incidentally, is a former member of your own club).

The water goes up quick and down quick in Long Churn. It is VERY dangerous in wet conditions - tragically, there have been fatalities due to flooding. However, my interpretation of the forecasts for Saturday (and it's early days as I type - check this yourself nearer the time obviously) is that by then the water may be on its way down. This means you might be OK - depending on timing and more up to date forecasts of course. It's definitely a case of err on the safe side but don't completely rule out a trip in there on Saturday. Can't comment on Sunday though; it's too far ahead. Also factor in that, with inexperienced people, even more care than normal with the weather is advisable. If in any doubt, it's probably safest to abandon the trip.

Hi pitlamp, thanks for the input... I've been looking at weather forecasts till my brain started to ache ;-)

I'm a frequent visitor to the cdg rainfall pages and agree with you... It's a fantastic resource provided by some really dedicated people. I hadn't seen the weir webcam before though. Good stuff.

I'm still going to do a quick recce  in the morning though and have no qualms about calling the whole thing off. I'd hate for myself or my friends/colleagues to become statistics!

Cheers,

Simon

I should probably add.... I'm barely out of nappies in caving terms myself. Whilst I'm organising and leading these two trips I won't be the only caver there. My mate and caving mentor will be mooching around in the background watching my every move and probably taking notes!

We had 24 mm in the rain gauge in Wharfedale this morning, but I was surprised to find Ease Gill relatively dry. And again, it seemed to have been dry on the west side of the dales, and pissing down in Wharfedale all of today. Looking at the rain radar, I can see why - the belt of the rain is running east west, and Clapham etc. are just to the north of it, and we were just to the south.

The weather forecast isn't too bad for the next few days, so we might be lucky...

Here just outside Kendal we've had hardly any rain over the last few days ? the odd sharp shower, and it's been pretty miserable (and very  threatening at times), but there's been no real accumulation of rain.

So it was your car at Bull Pot Farm earlier?!

Clapham beck has risen considerably in the past few hours.

Its all those bloody southerners praying for rain, as usual we get it. River levels near Skipton are near flooding, if that gives any indication.

Water levels at the Settle weir appear to have dropped and the forecast according to the Met Office is looking better.

To echo what Langcliffe said - we were at easegill yesterday (friday) and there was hardly any water, quite different to the flooded roads and fields around Leyburn!

Saturday was beautiful. Bright and clear. We git to bernies nice and early only to find that all the hire kit had been prebooked...... They had already turned away 2w other groups of potential hirers. Bugger...

Some things are just not meant to be...

Going to reschedule the caving trip for a couple if weeks time.

As long as they had some wellies and head torches there was nout stopping you taking em down Great Douk or Ribblehead. Inglesport would have had the helmets at least.

It made me laugth when coming back through Great Duke after a caving trip elsewhere as it was warmer underground I met a walker and his dog half way along the cave lol.

Just absolutely hammered it down here (Skipton) I do hope no one is underground in the Dales north of here as that is where the weather is heading!

Correction it's still hammering it down!

Our garden (Leeds) is under 6 inches of water. And there's at least another two days of rain to come.
