Is this the point where I say I'm in France & it's 19 deg C at 10 pm with a clear blue sky?

Or should I not say that?

Late afternoon Friday 22nd June. I can confirm that the western side of the Dales is currently in major flood.

5 inches of rain due, and everything is already flooding. Rain is centered on the Dales.

Oh and unrelated note (after looking out my window) a tree is down nearby so its windy too.

Alex is right; this is no ordinary flood. In the last 11 hours or so my rain gauge (not far from Clapham) has clocked 61 mm and it's still chucking it down. I've had to empty it once already for fear of it overflowing. (Don't want to miss recording any of this rain overnight.) I've been using rain gauges for close on 20 years and I can only remember this sort of amount over a similar period once before.

It's a good job today's weather did happen today and not tomorrow, when lots of folk may be underground.

Is that with or without the 12mm already recorded (as per Friday morning recording on CDG Vis) - either way it's a significant amount

No, the 12 mm you mention was in this morning's reading - I clocked 61 mm SINCE then (last time I looked). Glancing out of the window I can see several more mm in the gauge now - but I aint going outside to check directly again; it's gruesome at the moment. The grand total, together with other peoples' grand totals (which may well be more than mine), will all be on the CDG VisBot tomorrow morning.

It really is pretty bad round here as I type.

Pitlamp,

Thanks for doing the Visbot readings, really useful and appreciated.

It's the YSS Try Caving event this weekend too!

06-00 Saturday morning; just emptied the gauge. Rainfall over the last 24 hours has been 90 mm. In all the years I've been recording rainfall, I think this is a personal best.) The weather event started before I read the gauge yesterday so, adding in the 12 mm from then, this weather event has dropped 102 mm or 4 inches of rain.

It's actually dry as I type; not sure for how long though . . . .

Starting to wonder if its worth the effort and expense of travelling down to the dales on Sunday.  I was hoping to attend the Birkwith meet but looking at the various weather websites and the pictures on the news it looks a bit moist...
I'll likely turn up if there's the prospect of -any- caving but it'd be a pain to travel all that way just for a cup of tea and a sausage buttie in Bernies.

Even though they're nice sausage butties.

Not a bad place to be above ground though and there should be some awesome weather damage around, I bet a few dry stone walls need repairing.

90mm is just bonkers!

Pitlamp, what weather gauge do you use?

Its a good day to poke your head down entrances and view the caves in flood, maybe go down Lanc and see how deep the water in Fall pot is. Would make some great photo's that lake. I would go down my self only I have a prior appointment down south.

Hmm also Bar would be a good trip to see if the bottom of GG is a lake.

Last night the Settle-Horton road was under 30" of water in places. The fields next to the road were completely under water, just the top 6" of the fences showing! Brackenbottom lane was also exciting, as the little beck next to it was swollen enough to cover the whole road to a depth of about a foot, flowing fairly fast down to the junction.

This morning the water had dropped considerably, but still about 18" deep in one of the dips between Horton and Ribblehead.

A good day for a classic trip .... the Inglesport/Bernies exchange  (y)

If I was in the dales (and even in this weather I wish I was) I'd be having a look for pressure domes. I've seen them in Chapel-le-dale before - and i was impressed - but I'd be interested to see what Keld Head looks like.

I agree with Alex, Bar and Flood would be awesome trips, the main chamber would be epic,  lucky those with a permit for the weekend.

Though I also agree with Rachel, Ingleton traverse, pub, shop, cafe, Inglesport, Bernies, pub.
