Cadeby Pot - South Yorkshire

Has anyone been to Cadeby Pot or Cave recently (i.e. within the last 5 years and not in 1974)? They are in the magnesian limestone opposite Conisborough.

Spent a happy hour looking for these today without success until rain stopped play.

I'm looking for precise directions to avoid further wasted effort scrabbling about on the steep slope of the cutting in the gorse and thorn bushes.

Cheers,

AT

Many thanks to C.Raven for the accurate location of Cadeby Cave.
This is not in the first obvious quarry beyond the footbridge over the road in the old railway cutting but somewhat further W in a second quarry reached by following a track up L from the first quarry through a gate and past a memorial seat with a splendid view to the second small quarry. Cadeby Cave is on the R as described in NC1 and YSS1. The second quarry is behind the now defunct Earth Centre near the top of the scarp.

Many thanks also to Alan Speight for a supremely accurate location for Cadeby Pot and Richard Gibson for further information about this and other items of speleological interest in the locality. Cadeby Pot is as described in NC1 and YSS1 and involves some interesting climbs and a reasonable sized rift passage between the two entrances. These are not easy to locate! Proceed c200 paces W beyond the footbridge over the old railway cutting to an obvious steep path ascending the N side of the cutting. The E entrance is 20 paces L of this path near the top of the bank, and the narrow rift entrance is cunningly concealed behind a hawthorn bush. The W entrance is 10 paces further L above a small tree with some bits of plastic sheet stuck in it. Indeed, this W entrance is visible from the road below (or it is once you know where to look). It is bang opposite Conisbrough Castle and you get a good view of this when you pop your head out. There are quantities of diving line in the cave (for the climbs??) and some evidence of digging in various places in attempts to extend the large rift passage (I assume these are Richard's digs). Well worth a brief visit if you in the area but don't travel hundreds of miles as you may not even find the entrance(s).

I have yet to visit Richard's other suggestion due to the fact that it is on private land and is difficult to park close by for a quick visit. A more clandestine approach may be required here!  ;D

The West entrance of Cadeby Pot is clearly visible from the top of the keep of Conisbrough Castle looking N towards Cadeby. The East entrance is still cunningly hidden from view by the hawthorn bush.

Just a reminder that I have added this and many other South Yorkshire caves to the Wiki - any further updates on this and other listed caves would be helpful.

Found this link on cavemaps.org, after reading your blog before becoming a member.

I am very interested in finding these caves and pots in South Yorkshire, just wondered if there are anymore possible system's.

I have always heard rumours that there were Tunnels linking Roche Abbey with Hellaby Hall, just wondered if they maybe be part of the old system or man made tunnels now lost forever.

I have tracked down that Hallcross Moles SC have adopted the local cave's, and will be contacting them to see if they know anymore.

Hope the above link is useful, will keep digging  :coffee:
