Calling all Carlswark cavers & leaders

Oval Industries on Penistone Old Road in Sheffield sold (a few years back) a paint stripper called something like Neutrastrip. It was pretty good (took off varnish without too much fuss) and appears to be waterbased without any fumes. I think I still have a bit around (pm if you want a bit - away this week though) - though it seems like a good, less environmentally harmful product (OK - fewer fumes - may still not be pretty for the watery environment, which may be more of an issue underground) so it may be good to give them a bit of a boost.

Just a reminder that 6pm 19th March at Stoney M layby by 'Lovers leap' should anyone felt the urge for scrubbing!

There may be a bit of general tidying at Gin and Eyan Shaft as well.

PM for further details

5 of us made it to Carlswark last night for a bit of scrubbing. MarkC, Frank and myself from Chesterfield CC and Pete K and Beth from the Darkside.

Descended Gin about 5.30pm, found first arrow about 3 mins later on the right as you get into Eyam proper.

Wandered up and just past the stacked deads as the cave widens found a load of names on the ceiling scrawlled in soot.

Mark's scurion decided to not play and he donned his reserve light, then he went outside to fix notices at Gin and Eyam entrances regarding graffitti etc.  :read:

Frank and myself vigoursly had a go at much graffitti and were at South crawl when Pete and Beth turned up - without scrubbers (in other car he said!). Pete and Beth departed for O's & X's with some of our scrubbers.

After disposing of another yellow arrow and a white X near south crawl, Frank and I inspected the passage up to O's & X's - didn't find anything up to there.

Pete and Beth found a few yellow arrows around top of passage joining Eyam with passage to shaft and disposed of them.

I decided to have a crawl up to shaft - mainly as I haven't been there before!

Picked up an amount of rubbish on the way there - mainly kids gloves!?!

I popped into the small chamber beyond the shaft and found that some merchant banker  had sploshed luminos green paint onto the walls!  :spank:

Had a go at removed as much as I could using water from my wellies to wash it off as it was still wet - or not dried.
Beth rolled up after a few minutes with a brush and attacked the stuff as well.

Someone needs a good hiding for that mess!

Anyway, decided that time was pushing so went back to O's & X's with the rubbish and loaded it into back pack for the journey out.

Total time spent cleaning - about 2 hours.

Top marks to Frank, MarkC Pete and Beth.  :halo:

If anyone sees any reoccurence of arrows/graffitti, let me or PeteK know by PM.

Thanks from us 2 at the Hostel. All happened just as Martin says above. Got some very odd looks this morning at work when I told others where we went last night, "you mean you went down there OUTSIDE WORK????".

Good job jobbed anyway.

P.S spent a good half hour shifting rocks at the base of Eyam Shaft and you can now pass from the pitch to the main passage without having to crawl over piles of nobbly rocks/glass/bones. Much nicer.

A clean-up of the caves in Stoney Middleton Dale is beginning this weekend!

The DCA have paid for a skip, which will be in place in the Dale over the next few weeks. Volunteer cavers are required to bring any cave rubbish to the surface.  Just dump any unsightly rubbish you find outside the caves before the 4th May and we'll take care of the rest!

Rubble sacks are available if your really keen!

Cheers,

Mark C

"Rubble sacks are available if your really keen! "

Does that mean the digs have to be cleaned out properly as well?

We've found that rubble sacks are pretty good for hauling decomposing rubbish out of caves!

Of course old digs can be tidied up.  I can send you a map of where the rubbish will be cleared from if you like?  If any digs are still active let me know and I'll make sure they're left alone (i.e. Bamforth Hole, Aladdin's crawl, picnic passage are all still active as far as I'm aware).

Had a very constructed evening at Nickergrove last night.  Thats one ticked off the list!  Thanks for your help Martin

I'll be in Stoney all day tomorrow.  Any assistance would be much appreciated, even if its just bringing any rubbish to the surface as I'll be wondering around with a wheelbarrow to pick it up...

Must have missed you. I spent a few hours over lunch today collecting rubbish from the surface between the skip and Eyam Dale, mainly sticking to the track and the area around the Gin & Resurgance entrances to Carlswark. Managed to add 4 bin bags to the very sparse looking skip before hunger and distractions took over.
I anyone likely to be around tomorrow? I might be persuaded to head over again at some point for a few hours.

I was getting funny looks off the climbers, recon they thought I was a convict or something on community service!

Today was another constructive day clearing out the caves in the Dale.  Cucklet Delph was cleared of rubbish (including Nickergrove, Upper Delph Cave and Upper Delph Swallet), and 8 sack loads of beer cans were removed from the yoga hole shaft entrance.  Thanks very much to Matt for his help

All the rubbish is currently piled up at the entrance to the nature reserve.  Does anyone have a trailer or a van that can be used to transport it down to the skip?  We don't have either so please PM me if you can help...

Thanks also tPete & Co. for the 5 sacks of cave rubbish that was left in the skip  (y)

Tomorrow I'll be back at Carlswark clearing out some old digs with Martin, so if anyones at a loose end feel free to join us...

On behalf of all the locals who put quite a bit of work in with the nature reserve, please don't piss about with the stream at Top Sink, when you are up there guys, we would like it to flow down the Delph.

But great effort clearing stuff up  (y)

Had a quick visit to Stoney this morning to shift the pile of crap at Cucklet Delph. Met Mark at 10:15 and had everything shifted to the skip by 11 ish. Can't believe all that just came from Nickergrove and associated areas!

Nice work Mark! Let me know if you need a van again for the other end of the dale and I'll see what I can do.

We are done in the Delph now, but don't worry as I have been consulting John Fox; we did not disturb the dam, but we did remove the rusting metal and plastic pipes from the sinkhole.
