• Descent 302 is published on 15 February and it will soon be on its way to our subscribers.

In the newsdesk, read a review of the underground events at Kendal Mountain Festival, plus tales of cannibalism and the Cavefish Asteroid.

In regional news, we have three new connections in Ogof Agen Allwedd, a report on the iron mines of Anjou, an extension to Big Sink Cave in the Forest of Dean, a new dig in Yorkshire's Marble Steps Pot, student parties, an obituary for Tony Boycott, a tight find in the Peak District and a discovery in County Kerry with extensive formations.

Cavers not recovered from cave

I need clarification on the following:

Alan Erith was 5 years before being retrieved
Paul Esser was 39 years before being retrieved

As far as I can ascertain the following were never retrieved and are still in situ, advice please if this is wrong:

Neil Moss
Roger Solari
David Woods
Mossdale 6

and names of any others if I've missed them.

Thanks,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Graham

The only ones you're missing are Brian Kerr (Goyden, January 1958) and David Woods (Pollnacrom,  February 1981).

Seems to overlap fairly well with what you have above. Alderley edge boys found 4 months later George Etchells Alfred Hadfield, Michael Boulton Body found a year later 100 metres (330 ft) in, with no lighting (Ivy Green Cave)
Also a Michael woods found "several weeks" Ewes Top Moss Pot, Scales Moor

Probably because I maintain that page!

Noticed an omission on the Wikipedia page.  There was a fatality at Wheal Arthur near Calstock in Cornwall in the 1980s ('fraid I don't know the date).  A young lady (don't know name) rigged her rack back to front and took a 400ft plummet.

I had heard of this. Unfortunately, I can only use verifiable information and I have never found a reference for the incident.

Holy shit that's a fair old fall. ouch.

So just to finally confirm, as I'm going to be putting it into print, cavers trapped, or gone missing,
and never retrieved, or seen again, are

Brian Kerr (Goyden Pot January 1958) went missing, never seen again, but fate not otherwise known
Neil Moss (Peak Cavern May 1959) trapped, never retieved
Roger Solari (Agen Allwedd June 1974) ran out of air, never retieved
David Woods (Pollracrom Feb 1981) stuck, ran out of air, never retrieved
Mossdale 6 (Mosdale Caverns June 1967) drowned, bodies never retrieved

Can someone with access to the following CDG material please let me know the authors of these two pieces:

CDG Newsletter 18 page 6
CDG Newsletter 37 page 12

both should be Keld Head dives.

Graham

CDG Newsletter 18 page 6: No author given, could be the NL editor at the time Oliver Lloyd.

CDG Newsletter 37 page 12: Derek Crossland (4th July), Derek Crossland, Geoff Yeadon, Oliver Statham (5th July).

Graham - just seen this. I have a complete set of all KH dive logs printed out in a ring binder, in date order. If you've any further queries about that period, email me. Can probably sort it fairly quickly for you.

John Jones is still in Nutty Putty.

I assume this is UK only because if not the one I can think off the top of my head was that Russian down Krubera, how did not have proper up gear and died on the the rope at about -800 or so. I believe in-order to retrieve him 6 months later they had to cop him up, what a grim task that would have been

This is a very old thread, and Graham published his book years ago.
