Caves of Castleton - 3d Survey Project

For those who are interested I've sent Nick an updated version of the Peak.3d file, this has a few more bits of Peak on it compared to the first version.

If you hit the surface detail button, in addition to the small amount of surface detail there is there also appears some of the sumps at the west end of the system, I've guessed these areas until I get some firm data, but it gives a good idea of the structure of the current phreatic zone.

Now just a tad over 15,000m long.....

it would be even nicer if the surface topology would be added (topology and aero photo). Any good sources for UK available for free?

An updated .3d file has been uploaded this evening.

It would be helpful to know if people are still having problems accessing the site.

Nick.

The most up to date version of the Peak.3d model can now be viewed by going to:

http://caving.hucklow.org/CASTLETON_SURVEY/3d.htm

More data to be added shortly for:

Styx Inlet
Picnic Dig
Five Arches/Cavedale cave No. 8

Also a reminder, if anyone has any notes/data on any caves they've surveyed in the Castleton catchment area please send me a PM

I've uploaded a an updated file to the server this evening. It includes Giants system data from Paul Deakin and a start on the Treak Cliff stuff.

Nick.

Excellent work, well done.

'course you won't know whether it's a 3 m misclosure or not until you rule out any open streamway, even a very short bit, between the two.

Not on that, but similar things have happened before. When Sump 6 in LNRC was first dived & went deep it was assumed there would be no more open passage before the rising - right up until the discovery of Neath 8 a few years later. In Neath 8 there is a 2 m drop between the end of Sump 7 and the beginning of Sump 8.

It could happen.

Just look at bagshawe...

Its often said that if you where to be exploring down stream of some (as yet undiscovered) feeder cave and came to the top side of what is the upstream sump, you'd think to yourself "oh well - we are only 1 meter above the resurgence, thats it then". However, between you and the resurgence would be Bagshawe. I think the gap between East Canal and Main Rising is sufficient to warrant a small bet.
