Caves with leader access

Is there a limit on the length of a dig?

Well, if you can visit a site and not even see the bits affected by the digging, neither dig face, barrow run nor spoil tip, then I would say that the length of the dig is less than the length of the cave.

You know this forum might be a pretty useless discussion area for serious issues related to caving if people didn?t ever stay on track?. Oh wait? STAY ON TRACK!

So let me get this right... I have to join the MCG in order to become an ?Upper Flood? leader.  :-\

It logically follows then, that if somebody discovers a new bit of cave (even in a currently known cave) which is worth protecting via a ?leader/warden? system ? then that club effectively owns the cave & can set what ever access rules they wish!

That?s brilliant? inspired, and utterly, utterly stupid.

Or is it just me thinking the boat needs a good rocking?

It doesn't logically follow. Most clubs realise that if there is an unreasonable access system, before long the gate will come off. Which is what recently happened at Bone Hole. Now rectified I believe.

Over the years CSCC has put quite a bit of pressure on the MCG to open up the leadership system for Bone Hole to other clubs. We have had informal assurances that the system would be improved. But to date there has been no change, which is a pity.

Hands up anyone who can think of another cave where leaders can only be drawn from one club.  :-\

To answer Grahams question I believe The Landowners for St Lukes cave in Mendip will only let Aubrey take people down....and maybe Pete?? , so it could be argued that St Lukes is a leadership cave where leaders are supplied by one club..

Actually, who cares who the leaders are or what their role is, as long as trips can be booked, enjoyed, and new contacts are made. Where leaders are required, and the caves are popular, surely it is often going to involve some people doing the same trip many times, often with great company, but equally with cavers you may not wish to meet again. I suspect that being a cave leader is not always such a fun job to do.

Certainly not always but definitely most of the time.

hey Chris, you are in "The Know"
Why do you need a leader for such a small cave as Timber Hole?

Heylackington.

Can you name who leader(s) for Timber Hole might be? 'cos I don't know them.

Why are you so obsessed with this little dig site anyway?

Have you asked the diggers if you could have a look down there?

It might be that as a member of two participating (C.C.C.Ltd.) clubs
that I find it bizarre to have been given several years of runaround on this one.
Let us say I was from Scotland and not a member of a participating club

how the hell could I get into Timber Hole?

Until recently I was the access officer for one of these participating clubs,
didn't get me into Timber Hole though.
