Caves with leader access

Better a leader system than a gate with no key though RM - Sam's example of Bagshawe (as you know  ;) ) places access gates to some very sensitive, yet easily accessible areas bang next to the main drag that is open to all and sundry whether they be 'proper' cavers, or those less informed individuals who are there with an instructor, and not necessarily because they want to be.

I personally thought that St. Cuthbert's was great with a leader - we may have struggled to do such a varied and inclusive trip otherwise, due to routefinding complexity. As visitors to the area it just made it a better trip. Shame there was no guide for us in Swildon's on the previous day

What about splitting the thread? - leaving this one to gather the facts, and starting a new one elsewhere to argue about cave access.

What about leaving anyone who can be bothered to resurrect one of the numerous old ones about cave access?

Indeed; their function isn't to look after the cavers, but the cave, so the description is apt but I believe they would be in keeping with the spirit of this thread nonetheless.

DYO for one. Charterhouse cave for another in effect if not in name, though for the future the job of the latter will be to protect both.

I suppose the leaders in all the other caves are just there to help me blow my nose then.... ;) Or maybe they are lonely and want some company.

According to the MCG website:

Access is managed by Mendip Caving Group at the request of the landowner. Party size is limited to three plus the MCG leader.

Hands up anyone who can think of another cave where leaders can only be drawn from one club.  :-\

Otter Hole perhaps?

The stats about that place are interesting reading:

In 2008, there were a total of 41 trips arranged. Only 15 trips were successful in passing the sump; 6 only got as far as the sump (which failed to open), 14 were cancelled due to the weather, 5 were cancelled by the group and 1 group forgot the key.

The full list is here. Clearly a knowledgeable leader is a must.

No, I was thinking of a much smaller cave than that.

And not Timber hole, which is a dig, not a cave.
