Gott im Himmel.  What a load of fuckin' wankers.  I have said "No reasonable offer refused" so either payup or shut up.  :chair:  :tease:   :mad:/

This is very true in the first and one other listing, but all the rest, including the listing where the book in question is mentioned say: "No reasonably offer refused" . . . !

I'd have thought some would pay a premium to have a book "once owned by the world-famous Tony Oldham" . . . but, there you go. Just take a look at the antiquarian book market to see how the value of caving books escalates once they enter the outside commercial world. Tony can probably provide some figures to show what the hike is and just how low his prices are by comparison.

as you know Oldam and I  have our spats and I don't condone his use of expletives but in fairness like me he bought his stock off JRAT at the trade rate which was at least ?10 and a beer  so don't be too unfair on that one. Correct me if I am wrong but didn't JRAT donate the book to raise funds for an updated reprint which is planned in the next couple of years but until this book is a very good guide without updates. In effect the fiver being charged is really too cheap but does mean a quick return to provide the required capital

Sorry. I am not au fait (is that the right expression or did I just make that up?) with book experts methods. Being a laywoman I just thought that a book seller would sell out of print books at more than the previous selling price and books that were still available at shop (at the original price) at the usual price. Otherwise I would get confused and never know what anything was worth to know what a 'reasonable offer' was.

Did not mean to offend.

Distributors are usually sold books at half (50%) and retailers at two thirds (66.6%) the normal retail price. So, given the price paid for the book in question was "at least ?10 and a beer" (Mike Moore), the standard mark-up would put it on sale for ?15. Thereby, on the basis of normal sales practice, Tony Oldham's price of ?14 is actually underpriced. If you think the mark-up is steep, try booking a trade stand at Hidden Earth, paying the cost of transporting everything there and finding accommodation - all without making a loss, because some 'good cause' or other has started up selling the same title for a snip elsewhere.

Those who are enraged that they can buy the book for a fiver elsewhere should be aware that given the extraordinary situation under which the stock was cleared, this situation can by no means be regarded as being 'normal good sales practice' . . .

For establishing a benchmark: MENDIP UNDERGROUND by Dave Irwin & Tony Jarratt, Bat Products, Wells, 1999 - originally marketed for . . . ?14.00 - Descent (150), October/November 1999, p.28.
Well done, Tony!

However, the "good cause", the MCRA is still flogging 'em for a fiver. Of that money, ?1 goes to a cancer charity supported by Tony and the other ?4 goes towards financing the next edition.

Most major Mendip clubs will have a member or know someone on MCRA who can supply them.

You not have offended and I would not expect any one to know unfortunately publishers no longer want to sit on stock and do remainder things hence why bookshops carry little stock nowadays as they pay full trade prices only for the nargain bookshop to offer them the price of a pint next door

When I remember I try and make myself use the dpell checker - and then those dilly midtakes where you type the adjacent charavter come to light!

But, can someone add a dictionary of Welsh cave names please - it's not someone having upset a Scrabble board, as a chap at BT telephone enquiries once wittily quipped to me and the provider of the current spell checker seems to think.

BIOKOVO by Roman Ozimec and numerous contributors 2008  282 pp, numerous colour photos, about two per page.  This is luxurious monograph on the Biokovo mountain range in Croatia.  All aspects of the national park are covered with chapters on Geography, Geology, Speleology, Fungi, Fauna, Archaeology, Architecture, Ethnology, Mountains and climbing, Tourism etc.  The first account of caving in Biokovo dates from 1774 when Alberto Fortis described in his book ?A Journey Through Dalmatia? some natural ice pits.  Many of these shafts have north facing entrance preserving the ice even summer.  In the days before refrigerators these ice pits were highly sought after for preserving food.  The most famous cave in the Park is Tucepska Vilenjaca at a height of 1180 m above sea level.  A small hole at the bottom of a 100 m high rock face leads 2 km long cave with some impressive speleothems.  Vilenjaca means ?Cave of Fairies? and legend has it that beautiful blonde girls with horses legs lived in the cave and used to scare passers-by in the dark.  The deepest cave in the Park is Jama (Pothole) Amfors ? 788 m and with an entrance1590 m above sea level.  It is located 1 km south of Sveti Jure.  It is a very strenuous cave, near vertical with very little horizontal development.  HB In Croatian ?25.00

I have finally moved into my new house, it is very small, barely larger than a rabbit hutch.  It is piled to the roof with boxes of caving books.  The only way to get from one side of the room from the other is to crawl beneath the boxes.  It is so precarious that Bent Gear and Dud Gear refused to follow me.  I had to hand tea and biscuits out through a window and we all had tea on the lawn.  But I digress.  I really need to shift some books.  No reasonable offer refused, postage extra

CHAUVET CAVE / The Art of Earliest Times edited by Jean Clottes and translated by Paul G Bahn 2003  225 pp, 207 illus, most are colour photos.  The discovery of the Chauvet Cave in France?s Ard?che Valley in December 1994 was a remarkable event.  The incredible age of the cave paintings, which date back 35,000 years, and their exceptionally high quality were the source of both astonishment and admiration.  The images of mammoths, rhinoceroses, lions, bears, horses, and bison have since been seen around the world.  No other major site exists that is close in age to the arrival of modern humans in Europe.  All these discoveries are published here for the first time.  Graham and Linda are mentioned in the acknowledgements.  This is a large 11 x 14 inches coffee table book weighing out at 2?kg.  HB DW ?45.00

MAĞARABILMI VE MAĞARACILIK [Cave Science and Caving] by Caner Ozansoy and Hamdi Mengi 2006  335 pp, numerous photos in colour.

This is the Turkish equivalent of British Caving.  It begins by describing lava tubes which are illustrated with many fine colour photos by David Bunnell.  This is followed by a detailed account of karst caves, how they are formed, types of passages and surface features.  This neatly transforms into the Caves of the Bahamas and their fauna, mainly anthopods or cave shrimps.  From the underwater caves of the Bahamas we travel to the caves of the Yucatan and its underwater fauna, again, all illustrated with either line drawings or photos.

The chapter on speleothems begins with an explanation of the formation of stalactites, and stalagmites.  The various forms of speleothems: aragonite, crystal, spar, Baldacchino canopies, rafts, curtains, balloons, moonmilk, bathtubs, soda straws, deflected stalactites, coralloids, popcorn, showerheads, bell canopies, flowstone, blisters, shields, are described and illustrated by more fine colour photographs.

Forty-two cave minerals are described and most are illustrated in colour.

The chapter on Caving begins with a brief history of cave exploration.  Even Lloyd?s descent of Eldon Hole in 1770 receives a mention.  Caving in Turkey began in 1850 when Abdullah Bei described some caves near Istanbul.  In the first half of the twentieth century caves were mainly explored by archaeologists.  In 1955 Dr Temucin Aygen explored and published descriptions of many caves.  Organised caving began in 1964 when the MAD (Magura Arastirma Dernegi) [caving club] was formed.  Since 1973 BŰMAK (Bogazici Universitesi Magura Arrastirma Kulűbű) [Bosphorus University, Cave Research Club] have taken the lead, followed by other university caving clubs.

Surveying, caving gear, ropes, knots, SRT, photography are all covered in the chapter on Caving.

A short chapter on Cave Tourism is followed by descriptions of 45 top Turkish Caves:
The first is, Dupnisa Magarasi [Dupnisa Cave] which is located near the village of Sarpdere, in the Demirkőy district of Kirkareli.  Well off the beaten track, a 4WD vehicle is required to get to the cave.  The cave has three entrances, one of which is the resurgence for the River Rezve.  This river forms the border between Turkey and Bulgaria.  One chamber is 150 x 60 m and contains some massive speleothems.  Another chamber is the hibernation site of the Greater Horseshoe bat.  The total length of the cave is 2720 m.

The book is concluded with, Longest & Deepest Caves of the World, Largest Chamber, Longest and Deepest in Turkey, a Glossary and 96 references.  SB In Turkish ?35.00

I'm looking for a copy of Race Against Time by Eyre and Frankland.

I'd prefer a hardback.

Have any of our resident booksellers got one for sale?
