There was a right old ding-dong going on on Mine Explorer involving Tony, which I was following as avidly as one follows a carry-on sketch. Unfortunately it got a bit out of hand (FW references), so the mods sorted it.

Guess what, I come here, and I can sense the excitement building here instead....

Round 1 - chocks away etc.

Chris.

MANAGING ABANDONED MINES FOR BATS by Richard E Shewin, J Scott Alyenbach and David L Waldien 2009  103 pp, illus.  Although this book concentrates on mines, most of the information within, applies equally to caves.  Like caves, bats use of mines is dependent on humidity and temperature.  In arid regions bats will chose a mine with pools of water.  In winter mines are used as hibernation sites whilst in summer, some are used as maternity sites. KAPCTOBOTO Б OГATCTBO HA C. ЯГOДИHA  [THE KARST TREASURE OF YAGODINA VILLAGE]. The main attraction in the village is the famous Yagodinska cave, also known as the Imam?s Hole (Imamova Dupka). The cave has been formed by the Buynova river which frows into the Vucha river. The river eroded the marble rock for millions of years in order to produce a true masterpiece that spreads over 5 levels and has a total length of 10.5km. Here archeologists have discovered traces of an Neolithic cave settlement (4th millennium BC) while visitors can enjoy the view of popular and rare rock formations such as stalagmites, stalactites, cave pearls, elephant ears, leopard fur, and many more.?  SB In Bulgarian ?10.00

I have finally moved into my new house, it is very small, barely larger than a rabbit hutch.  It is piled to the roof with boxes of caving books.  The only way to get from one side of the room from the other is to crawl beneath the boxes.  It is so precarious that Bent Gear and Dud Gear refused to follow me.  I had to hand tea and biscuits out through a window and we all had tea on the lawn.  But I digress.  I really need to shift some books.  No reasonable offer refused, postage extra

ICH WAR IN DER UNTERWELT / Impression von abenteuerlichen H?hlenexpedition by Gerhard E Schmitt 1986  128 pp, many colour photos.  Impressions of adventurous caving expeditions is the subtitle and Gerhard goes to Sardinia and photographs some glorious speleothems.  Next stop is Turkey and the Tinaz Cave.  Although he fails to come out at the resurgence, he has produce some nice photos of large cave passages.  Still in Turkey Gerhard explores G?versin H?hle, the Altin-Besik River System.  Next he explore the ?Dead Dog cave in southern Turkey.  He finds a dog?s body at the bottom of this 340 m deep cave, hence the name.  If you want to find out about Anou Boussouil in Algeria, Borrowiz Cave, Veshtucoc Cave,  San Christobal Cave and El Chorreadro in South Mexico, you will have to buy the book.  Ex-library.  HB In German  ?19.00

SECRETS OF THE ICE AGE / The World of the Cave Artists by Evan Hadingham 1980  342 pp  many photos of cave paintings etc.  The author throws new light onto the Ice Age way of life.  First he starts with a reappraisal of the much-maligned Neanderthals and then describes how hunting bands, a few strong, would annually follow for hundreds of miles the migration of vast reindeer herds: how craftsman fashioned increasingly diverse tools and ornaments; and how the hunter-artist seems to have developed a society far more affluent and peaceable than the `cave-man? image suggests. HB DW ?9.00

Re-stocked due to popular demand:

SPELEOLOGICAL BIBLIOGRAPHY OF SOUTH ASIA by Daniel Gebauer et al. 1995  ii + 226 pp 2509 entries 20 illus.  This bibliography is intended to be a caving device rather than a collector's item.  This book provides hints to unexplored caving areas.  Because many of the references are from obscure sources, they are backed up with annotations.  A separate chapter is dedicated to man-made caves etc.  Concerning Tibet and Nepal, a number of cave relevant and often ancient texts in Tibetan and Nepali language and scripts, which have remained obscure, were brought to the speleological world by co-operating with scholars of cultural history.  Finally, a few pages deal with early Himalayan cave friends like Bharo `Maimed Hand' Jnanakiti (1016-1060) and Jets?n Milarepa (1052-1135).  SB ?24.00

No reasonable offer refused, postage, will haggle

BIOKOVO by Roman Ozimec and numerous contributors 2008  282 pp, numerous colour photos, about two per page.  This is luxurious monograph on the Biokovo mountain range in Croatia.  All aspects of the national park are covered with chapters on Geography, Geology, Speleology, Fungi, Fauna, Archaeology, Architecture, Ethnology, Mountains and climbing, Tourism etc.  The first account of caving in Biokovo dates from 1774 when Alberto Fortis described in his book ?A Journey Through Dalmatia? some natural ice pits.  Many of these shafts have north facing entrance preserving the ice even summer.  In the days before refrigerators these ice pits were highly sought after for preserving food.  The most famous cave in the Park is Tucepska Vilenjaca at a height of 1180 m above sea level.  A small hole at the bottom of a 100 m high rock face leads 2 km long cave with some impressive speleothems.  Vilenjaca means ?Cave of Fairies? and legend has it that beautiful blonde girls with horses legs lived in the cave and used to scare passers-by in the dark.  The deepest cave in the Park is Jama (Pothole) Amfors ? 788 m and with an entrance1590 m above sea level.  It is located 1 km south of Sveti Jure.  It is a very strenuous cave, near vertical with very little horizontal development.  HB In Croatian ?15.00

Elaine said:
Sorry. I am not au fait (is that the right expression or did I just make that up?) with book experts methods. Being a laywoman I just thought that a book seller would sell out of print books at more than the previous selling price and books that were still available at shop (at the original price) at the usual price. Otherwise I would get confused and never know what anything was worth to know what a 'reasonable offer' was.

Did not mean to offend.

Shame on you Elaine.  I like to offend, it makes my day  :spank:

I have finally moved into my new house, it is very small, barely larger than a rabbit hutch.  It is piled to the roof with boxes of caving books.  The only way to get from one side of the room from the other is to crawl beneath the boxes.  It is so precarious that Bent Gear and Dud Gear refused to follow me.  I had to hand tea and biscuits out through a window and we all had tea on the lawn.  But I digress.  I really need to shift some books.  No reasonable offer refused, postage extra

MAĞARABILMI VE MAĞARACILIK [Cave Science and Caving] by Caner Ozansoy and Hamdi Mengi 2006  335 pp, numerous photos in colour.

This is the Turkish equivalent of British Caving.  It begins by describing lava tubes which are illustrated with many fine colour photos by David Bunnell.  This is followed by a detailed account of karst caves, how they are formed, types of passages and surface features.  This neatly transforms into the Caves of the Bahamas and their fauna, mainly anthopods or cave shrimps.  From the underwater caves of the Bahamas we travel to the caves of the Yucatan and its underwater fauna, again, all illustrated with either line drawings or photos.

The chapter on speleothems begins with an explanation of the formation of stalactites, and stalagmites.  The various forms of speleothems: aragonite, crystal, spar, Baldacchino canopies, rafts, curtains, balloons, moonmilk, bathtubs, soda straws, deflected stalactites, coralloids, popcorn, showerheads, bell canopies, flowstone, blisters, shields, are described and illustrated by more fine colour photographs.

Forty-two cave minerals are described and most are illustrated in colour.

The chapter on Caving begins with a brief history of cave exploration.  Even Lloyd?s descent of Eldon Hole in 1770 receives a mention.  Caving in Turkey began in 1850 when Abdullah Bei described some caves near Istanbul.  In the first half of the twentieth century caves were mainly explored by archaeologists.  In 1955 Dr Temucin Aygen explored and published descriptions of many caves.  Organised caving began in 1964 when the MAD (Magura Arastirma Dernegi) [caving club] was formed.  Since 1973 BŰMAK (Bogazici Universitesi Magura Arrastirma Kulűbű) [Bosphorus University, Cave Research Club] have taken the lead, followed by other university caving clubs.

Surveying, caving gear, ropes, knots, SRT, photography are all covered in the chapter on Caving.

A short chapter on Cave Tourism is followed by descriptions of 45 top Turkish Caves:
The first is, Dupnisa Magarasi [Dupnisa Cave] which is located near the village of Sarpdere, in the Demirkőy district of Kirkareli.  Well off the beaten track, a 4WD vehicle is required to get to the cave.  The cave has three entrances, one of which is the resurgence for the River Rezve.  This river forms the border between Turkey and Bulgaria.  One chamber is 150 x 60 m and contains some massive speleothems.  Another chamber is the hibernation site of the Greater Horseshoe bat.  The total length of the cave is 2720 m.

The book is concluded with, Longest & Deepest Caves of the World, Largest Chamber, Longest and Deepest in Turkey, a Glossary and 96 references.  SB In Turkish ?25.00

SPAROZNA PECINA/ SPAROZNA CAVE by Dalibor Res, Andrija and Maja Sulic.  2010  11 pp, 7 colour photos, survey and a B&W photo from 1911.  With a length of 607 m and a depth of 112 m, Sparuzna Cave is the largest cave in the Kastav region, and it is located between the villages Brajani and Breza. The cave is name a part of the forest known as Sparozna Grove. The cave is located on a karst plateau in the Kastav Region, which divides Cicarija and Gorski Kotar. The entrance into the cave is located about 600 m west-southwest of the Mackov Peak (504 m above sea level). This cave has many names. After over 130 years of research, from literature and from tradition, the cave was known by various names such as: Sparuzna jama, Sparozna, Sparozna, Sparuzina, Sparozna, Vela jama, Jurciceva, Grotta degli asparagi, Grotta fuia, Die Wilde Spargelgrotte, Grotte di Kastua. Since many of the first explorers of this cave were foreigners (Italians, Germans), it is possible that they entered in their reports only the name known to them, and later explorers cited data known from the literature, and so continued to repeat the errors. Beside first foreign explorers, they are also articles by local authors who have, as well as the former mayor of Kastav, Kazimir Jelusic, used the name "Sparozna pecina" (Sparozna Cave) that is now accepted as the true and original name of this cave. Excavation in the cave has produced numerous bones including the complete skull of the cave bear (Ursus spelaeus).  In 1886 the cave was the first in Croatia to be open to the public.  In Croatian and English.  SB New ?5.00

ABSTRACT
Before the publication of Dreybrodt & Laumanns (2005a), which summarises the exploration done between 2000 and 2005, northern Laos was virtually unknown to speleology. Only a few reconnaissance projects were conducted prior to 2000 in the province of Luang Phrabang. The afore-mentioned publication provided information on 24.3 km of cave passages from 68 caves. In the framework of the ?Northern Lao-European Cave Project? (www.laoscaveproject.de) the investigations were continued in 2006 in Vieng Phouka (Luang Nam Tha province), and in 2007 and 2008 mainly in Vieng Xai (Houaphan province) (Dreybrodt & Laumanns 2008). This publication reports on the findings of the years 2009 and 2010, including a biospeleological chapter, a chapter on physico-chemical water analysis and the speleogenesis of the Tham Chom Ong System as well as a chapter on palaeoclimatic research. It comprises descriptions of 39 caves with 28.3 km of new passages. Overall, 80 km of cave passage from 176 caves has been surveyed and published to date in northern Laos (excluding Vang Vieng and Kasi).

The river eroded the marble rock for millions of years in order to produce a true masterpiece that spreads over 5 levels and has a total length of 10.5km.
